Year 5- Autumn 1- Week 2
Date: 10th Sep 2025 @ 11:15pm
We have had a fantastic week of learning in Year 5!
In maths, we have been working on place value with 4- and 5-digit numbers. We have been exploring how each digit has its own value, depending on its position, and how numbers can be partitioned in different ways.
To help us practise, we played a variety of fun games that tested both our fluency and our reasoning skills. Some games helped us to quickly recognise the value of digits, while others challenged us to explain our thinking and spot mistakes.
In English this week, we began exploring the book Queen of the Falls. To start, we took part in a fun DT challenge: designing and building something to protect an egg from a fall! Just like Annie Edson Taylor, who bravely went over Niagara Falls in a barrel, we had to think carefully about how to keep something safe on a dangerous journey.
After testing our designs (with a few cracked eggs along the way!), we moved on to learning more about Annie’s incredible story.
To bring the event to life, we wrote recounts in the first person, imagining what it would have been like to experience the roar of the water, the rocking barrel, and feelings of anticipation. Our writing was full of excitement, tension and drama.
It’s been a fantastic start to our new English unit—we can’t wait to see what happens next in Queen of the Falls!
In RE, we looked at different versions of the Bible and its various parts.
We had great fun in art, creating installations, using everyday objects. We are looking forward to continuing this topic next week!
