How have we reached this point already? The end of the penultimate half term of Year 5! We have achieved so much throughout this half term with plenty of memorable moments…

Here are just some of our highlights:

  • Writing: The children wrote persuasive complaint letters about pollution in the local area, using the ‘poison pool’ from The Paperbag Prince as their inspiration. They used formal language, clear structure and strong vocabulary to express their concerns and suggest solutions – so many brilliant examples of purposeful writing!
  • Reading: Our reading journey continued as we explored powerful themes in The Paperbag Prince, learned all about Japanese culture, including Manga, and we were also introduced to Get Epic! - a brilliant eLibrary where the children began discovering books of their own choosing.
  • Maths: Our focus this half term shifted to translation, coordinates, line graphs, shapes and multiplying fractions. The children have tackled each topic with enthusiasm and growing confidence. TT Rockstars has also continued to be a big highlight - we've seen a fantastic rise in 'Rock Heroes', and everyone has made brilliant progress in boosting their rock status!
  • RE: We have been learning about inspiring women in the Old Testament. The children explored the stories of figures such as Ruth, Esther and Deborah, reflecting on their courage, faith, and leadership. Thoughtful discussions helped us consider how these examples still hold meaning today.
  • Collective Worship: We have continued using Picture News as the focus of our Collective Worship sessions. Through these discussions, we have explored both the Christian values and the spiritual connections linked to each topic, encouraging thoughtful reflection and meaningful conversations;
  • PE: Highlights have included our Wazball sessions with many different varieties of the game serving to test the children’s tactical awareness and skillsets. Alongside this, Year 5 have developed their athletic skills through running and throwing focused lessons, showing great energy and enthusiasm throughout.
  • Music: Stephen Mannings from Liverpool Cathedral Choir has continued to lead our vocal coaching sessions which is building to the ‘Big Sing’ concert at Liverpool Cathedral in July.
  • Geography: The children have developed a wealth of knowledge about Japan and its culture and origins. They have learned all about Japan’s location on the map as well as its amazing natural features, such as Mouth Fuji. We also found out about the people who live there, their cities and what daily life is like in Japan. A particular highlight was our Japanese food tasting session on the final day of this half term!
  • Art: The children focused on architecture by practising observational drawing, printmaking, and designing buildings. They also explored architectural features and studied Hundertwasser’s unique style.

See you all in a week’s time for the FINAL half term of Year 5. We’ll be sure to make it the best yet!
