What a busy and hardworking week it has been in Year 6! From the moment the children stepped into the classroom on Monday, they have shown fantastic focus, determination and maturity.

In Maths this week, Year 6 have been deepening their understanding of percentages and exploring different methods to find percentages of amounts. Mr McCabe’s group have been developing real flexibility, choosing from a range of strategies to work out percentage problems efficiently and confidently. Meanwhile, Mr Hirst’s group have been strengthening their fluency in fractions, making clear links between the different methods for each operation and equivalences too. We also enjoyed a fun, fast-paced “1% Club” style lesson, where the children tackled a series of tricky, out-of-the-box questions that really tested their reasoning skills. The enthusiasm and determination to problem solve was fantastic to see!

In English, we continued our work on ‘Star of Fear, Star of Hope’, uncovering the truth behind the mysterious figures known as the Midnight Ghost and Madame Eleven O’Clock. The children stepped into Lydia’s shoes, writing from her perspective as she was suddenly forced to leave Helen’s birthday sleepover. They explored Lydia’s fear and confusion, as well as Helen’s feelings of hurt and anger, producing some deeply thoughtful and emotive writing.

In RE, Year 6 continued to deepen their understanding of Advent by building on last week’s exploration of its meaning as a time of “coming” and preparation. We revisited the key scripture passages from both the Old and New Testaments and discussed how these links help Christians understand Advent as a journey towards hope, light and promise. The children reflected thoughtfully on why waiting can be an important part of faith and considered how themes of anticipation and preparation connect to their own lives. Their discussions showed real maturity and a growing grasp of the significance of this season in the Christian calendar.

It’s been a fantastic week in Year 6 and the children should feel really proud of everything they’ve achieved. We hope everyone enjoys a well-deserved weekend and we’re already looking forward to the official start of December and Advent next week. The class are excited to decorate the classroom and bring a little festive cheer to our learning!
