..and that's a wrap for 2024!

It certainly has been a wonderful term and this latter half-term has been packed with highlights, plus plenty of festive fun. Here’s a look back at just some of the magical moments we’ve shared:

•    Writing: We wrote a diary entry linked to our focus text, ‘Star of Fear, Star of Hope’ by Jo Hoestlandt, as well a Christmas-themed instruction text on how to ‘steal Christmas’ like The Grinch!
•    Reading: After finishing ‘Holes’ by Louis Sachar, we started a self-help book called ‘Dare To Be You’ by Matthew Syed. Following a thorough discussion and investigation into several story books, we have also chosen ‘Skellig’ by David Almond as our new class novel.
•    Maths: Aside from all the competitive games and activities, we have focused primarily on arithmetic objectives in lessons this term. The children should be very pleased with their much-improved scores in SATs arithmetic papers!
•    History: We continued our learning about the World Wars, focusing this half-term on how the two wars impacted Formby. Particular highlights included a visit from John from Formby Civic Society, who shared his extensive knowledge with us, and our weekly trips to Formby Luncheon Club to interview its members.
•    Kindness Project: We took part in a range of activities that reminded us of how we can be ‘kind to ourselves’- including meditation and mindfulness practice!
•    Music: We have now concluded our weekly brass sessions with Mrs Hughes from Sefton Music Services. Thank you to Mrs Hughes for all her support.
•    Christmas Carol Service: Some our Year 6 pupils brought Christmas cheer to our local community by supporting St Peter’s Christmas service at St Joseph’s Care Home.
•    Supporting the School Community: Many of our pupils have relished the opportunities to support the rest of the school in various ways, including narrating Reception’s Nativity and WOW services, helping to run stalls at The Christmas Fair and in their leader roles such as Kindness Committee and Digital Leaders.
•    Festive Fun: We had a great time filming our latest Kindness Video, enjoying Party Day, a Santa Dash and celebrating with a Christmas Extravaganza.

Reminders for next half term:

  • There is no set homework for the Christmas holidays – except for revising the last weekly spellings set, which will roll over to January.
  • The Year 6 Virtual Classroom has been updated and attached to this blog and it includes links to websites and resources. Pupils can find their individual passwords on last year's Year 5 Google Classroom. Don’t forget the 'Practice' section on SATs Companion, where children can choose topics to practise in Maths, Reading, SPaG, or Science.
  • PE days are now as follows: Wednesday and Thursday.

The Year 6 team have thoroughly enjoyed the academic year so far and are looking forward to another great term in January.

Thank you to all those parents who sent in gifts - including the class collection - and well wishes this week. It is never expected, but always appreciated! We wish everyone a safe and enjoyable Christmas holiday.

Thank you once again and we will see you all in 2025!
