Year 6 - Autumn 2 - Week 6
Date: 9th Dec 2025 @ 1:30pm
.
As we come to the end of our final full week before the Christmas break, Year 6 are finishing the term with the same fantastic energy, enthusiasm and determination that they have shown all year. With just a short three-day week still to come, the children have been making the most of every moment - celebrating successes, enjoying festive activities and continuing to work hard right up to the end of term.
In Maths this week, Year 6 have been busy sharpening their fraction skills, with a festive twist! Mr Hirst’s group have been working hard on fractions through Christmas-themed problem solving, bringing some seasonal fun into their learning while continuing to build confidence and accuracy. Meanwhile, Mr McCabe’s group have been focusing on converting between fractions, decimals and percentages, before extending their understanding further with percentage increase and decrease. They even put their skills to the test by planning a summer holiday for their teacher, using real-life budgeting and calculations. A brilliant way to see just how Maths can be used in the real world.
In English, Year 6 reached the powerful conclusion of ‘Star of Fear, Star of Hope’ and reflected deeply on its themes of courage, friendship and survival. As part of our ‘Author Book’ work, the children wrote up their final pieces - a beautifully crafted flashback narrative retold from Lydia’s point of view. Writing as Lydia, who was now a grandmother, the children reflected back on the fateful night that she left Helen’s sleepover to warn her family and escape from being captured like so many other Jewish people of the time. The quality of writing and depth of understanding shown in these final pieces was truly impressive and the children captured emotion, tension and reflection with real maturity and flair.
We have also been busy with our Sing and Praise rehearsals as we prepare for next week’s Christmas Service at St Peter’s Church. The children have been practising a range of hymns, including much-loved classics such as ‘Away in a Manger’ and ‘It Was on a Starry Night’. Their enthusiasm and commitment have filled the classroom and school hall with festive spirit and we can’t wait to share this with our school community alongside our friends in KS1 and KS2.
An undoubted highlight of our week was our visit to the Christmas Extravaganza, our wonderful school Christmas fair. Year 6 had a brilliant time exploring all the festive stalls, trying out the games and, of course, visiting Santa’s grotto. As always, the children showed real maturity and kindness with their Reception buddies too as they assisted them with navigating the fair, supporting them to both join in the fun and enjoy everything on offer. A huge thank-you to Team TSP for organising such a fantastic event. The effort, imagination and festive spirit that went into the Christmas Extravaganza made it a truly magical experience for everyone.
From the excitement of the Christmas Present Room to the buzz of the Christmas Extravaganza and even a brilliant Rocksteady concert, it has certainly been a week to remember in Year 6. With only two and a half school days left of 2025 before the Christmas break begins, we’re looking forward to ending the term with plenty more smiles, sparkle and seasonal cheer. Until then, enjoy the weekend!
Reminders:
-The final Maths and English homework of 2025 has been set via the SATs Companion platform (Mr McCabe's Group) and sent home in books (Mr Hirst's Group). This is due to be completed on or before next Wednesday (17th).
-As we reach the end of term, there won’t be any new spellings set over the Christmas break. If the children would still like to practise, the Year 5/6 Statutory Spellings lists have been attached to Google Classroom. These are key words that we’ll all be working on throughout Year 6, with the aim of spelling as many as possible with confidence by the end of the year. The children could choose a few tricky words, test themselves, or even try writing them in some festive sentences.
