We have had a wonderful week in Year 1! As always, the children have been working hard, taking part in lots of exciting activities. In English, we have continued to explore “The Lion Inside” and have enjoyed getting into character as Lion and Mouse, to help us think of some fantastic questions for each of them. We have been busy developing our understanding of place value in Maths and have been practising one more and one less and comparing numbers. On top of this, we have thoroughly enjoyed exploring the properties of everyday materials and going on a scavenger hunt to find objects around the classroom with different properties, in Science. We were amazed at the variety of materials and the many properties each of them have!
This week in RE, we began our new unit, ‘Why is Jesus special?’ We enjoyed watching a video montage of scenes from Disney films that featured some familiar faces! We thought carefully about the common theme that ran throughout the video and soon realised that all the characters were friends. We were excited to see so many of our favourite characters and we thought carefully about why the characters made such good friends. We then had a fantastic discussion about friendship and considered the following questions:
- How do we make friends?
- Who are our special friends?
- What makes a person a good friend?
From the discussion, we realised that the qualities that make a good friend are the reasons why our friends are special. We used our green thinking hats to consider how our friends make us feel and discussed how all of the qualities that make our friends special make us feel only positive emotions. We are looking forward to finding out if Jesus chose his disciples based on similar qualities!
Year 1 were extremely excited after having taken part in the launch session for their ‘Young Leaders Award’ this week. Taking us on our journey to achieving the award is Gracie, who will help us to learn what being a leader means and help us to gain the skills to become one. Year 1 learnt that throughout the award they will take on challenges focusing on kindness, perseverance and teamwork. Our final challenge will require us to take action and carry out a project to help us to serve our local community. Year 1 can’t wait to get started on developing their leadership skills! We’re excited to be involved in this programme which has been designed and written by the Archbishop of York Youth Trust. For more information visit www.abyyt.com.
Well done for another week full of hard work and lots of fun. Have a lovely weekend!

We have had a fantastic week with our Year 1 friends and have enjoyed lots of exciting learning opportunities. We have been busy learning about tens and ones, representing numbers using Dienes in our Maths lessons. We have also enjoyed exploring our new text, “The Lion Inside”, by Rachel Bright and Jim Field, in English. On top of this, we have had so much fun taking part in our dragon themed PE lessons, which helped us to develop our sending and receiving skills, whilst having to carefully transport our dragon eggs to different locations.
In RE, Year 1 have been learning about Epiphany, the festival celebrating the visit of the Wise Men to Bethlehem, to see Jesus. We learnt how the Wise Men visited Jesus after the shepherds and we discussed the different gifts that they gave. This inspired us to think about the gifts that we received over Christmas and we used our yellow thinking hats to reflect on the gifts that meant the most. Connecting our discussion to our “invisible gift” activity before Christmas, we shared the invisible gifts that we had given or received during the festive period. Wearing our green thinking hats, we discussed how these special gifts made us feel and we soon realised that these are the gifts that mean the most to us. They weren’t bought from a shop and wrapped up, they were given from the heart and are meaningful. We enjoyed recording the many different invisible gifts on our own paper presents in our RE books.
Year 1 had a rather surprising start to their week, when they entered the classroom to find muddy paws prints, clawed displays and a terrible mess! They could not believe their eyes and there was a real buzz of excitement as we investigated the crime scene. Year 1 decided to use their black thinking hats to discuss what we knew from looking at the clues. There were fantastic ideas and lots of the children made connections to prior learning and their own experiences, to identify the kinds of animals that could have been responsible. The claws and large paw prints, alongside tiny footprints and a sprinkling of cheese, meant that Year 1 concluded the mess had been left by two characters from a story that had been left amongst the debris, “The Lion Inside”, by Rachel Bright and Jim Field. We have enjoyed spending the week exploring the story to find out more about our special visitors and we are eager to find out about the journey they have been on together, before escaping from their book!
Well done for another week full of hard work and lots of fun, Year 1. Have a lovely weekend and we look forward to seeing you on Monday!

Welcome back and a happy New Year to you all! It has been so wonderful to see our classroom filled with smiling faces again and we have enjoyed lots of activities to kickstart our new term. In Maths, Year 1 have been busy learning about tens and ones and have been learning how to use Dienes to represent numbers. It has been a pleasure to have been able to share and listen to everyone’s Christmas news and Year 1 have worked hard to create some super writing all about their festivities, in English.
In Collective Worship this week, we began exploring our new monthly value of “Wisdom”. We used our black thinking hats to explore and discuss the meaning of this month’s value. A common idea that the children shared was that owls are thought of as wise and are often used as a symbol of wisdom. We used our yellow thinking hats to reflect on stories that we have read that include owls and made the connection with our value, thinking about the wise words that the owls in the story often shared. We then enjoyed creating our own “Branches of Wisdom”, on which we stood our carefully decorated paper owls that shared our own wise words, for everyone to see.
We had a rather creative end to our first week of term and put on our multicoloured thinking hats to begin creating tiles for our class mural. Inspired by the patterns and symbols on our school building, Year 1 designed a tile to represent our wonderful school. They thought carefully about what school means to them and took their time to choose designs unique to Trinity St. Peter’s and that captured what they enjoy about school. Year 1 were very excited to use modelling materials to bring their tiles to life and used a variety of skills to cut, mould and add texture to clay to create their tile. It was fantastic to see our superstar artists at work and we can’t wait to see how wonderful the tiles look when they have been painted!
Well done for a great start to the Spring term. We are so excited to see what our new term brings. For more information on what we will be learning about this term, please click here. We hope you have a lovely weekend!

What an amazing start to our new school year! We have had the most wonderful few days getting to know about our new year group and settling into our new classroom.
We had a very exciting start to Year 1, when we discovered an unusual package tied to balloons which was tangled in our pirate ship! We were eager to find out what was inside and were thrilled to find out it was Disney Pixar’s “Up” DVD. On further inspection, we realised a note was attached to the package. As we read the note, the strange delivery began to make sense and it became clear we had a very important job to do! The characters from the film, Carl and Russell, were in a little bit of bother and asked us to use our school values to complete some special challenges. For each challenge we could complete, they would win a balloon which they could tie to their house to make it float again. Year 1 were very excited about their mission and could not wait to get started!
Over the past few days, Year 1 have had to use their school value of “Serve” and, just like Russell and Carl, had to share ways in which they follow in Jesus’ footsteps to respect others and the world around us.
They used our school value of “Hope” to create some wonderful adventure books that are now full of their hopes and dreams for the future.
Finally, they brought the week to a close using their school value of “Imagine” to create some beautiful cloud pictures. Ellie and Carl loved watching the clouds and making them into pictures in the film and we are sure they would love to see the artwork we have created, inspired by one of their favourite activities.
Each mission was completed to a very high standard and we are confident those balloons will be on Carl and Russell’s house in no time!
It has been a real pleasure to welcome the children back this week. It has been such a wonderful start to the year and we look forward to this year’s learning journey.
Well done for all of your hard work this week, Year 1! We can’t wait to see you on Monday. Have a brilliant weekend!
