What an incredible week we have had in Year 1!

This week in Geography, we have been focusing on a new country, Austraila. We loved learning about the different animals, cultures and famous landmarks. We were shocked to learn that Christmas happens in their Summer not Winter! After, we created circle maps to record all the different facts we had learnt.

In Maths, we began to explore Place Value again, this time to 20. Before we moved past 10, we connected our learnig back to before Christmas and recalled our number bonds within 10 whilst also solving reasoning problems. We then used this knowledge, to help us with out number knowledge to 20, focusing on the concept of 10 and a bit. To help us, we have been practicing using a range of resources such as tens frames, Deines and Rekenrek. We will continue this topic next week, focusing on the numbers 17,18,19 and 20.

In Phonics, some groups moved onto a new book whilst other revisited books from before Christmas in order to develop our fluency and expression. Some children will have moved groups whilst others have stayed in the same groups but have a new teacher. We are so impressed with all the children and their sound retention. Keep it up, Year 1!

We continued to look at portraits in Art but this time of ourselves. We started the lesson by thinking of one thing from home that makes us special or we find special, drawing and labelling it. After, we identifed one thing in school we enjoyed to use, then Miss Jones took a picture of us. Some children chose objects like the football or a book, whilst other chose friends. Once our photo was taken, we stuck it in our books and described what we liked about our picture and explained why.

In PE, we continued with our topics 'Team Building' and Gymnastics. In our Team Building lesson, we took it in turns to blindfold our partners, whilst giving them careful instructions to move around the classroom without bumping into anyone. In Gymnastics, we connected our learning back to last week, moving around the hall like various animals before developing our poses. We learnt several new poses this week and worked hard with our partners, taking it in turns to pose and give feedback.

Finally, on Friday we were given the fantastic news that our new playground is ready for us to use as of Monday. We all went our for a quick look and loved learning about the different resources that have been added. Our new stage was a firm favourite!
