What a wonderful start to the New Year! We were so happy to welcome everyone back to Year 2 and start learning again.

We started the week with some fun, teambuilding activities in PE! We had to make our ways through a tricky obstacle course whilst remembering what challenges we had to complete along the way. We worked in our teams to help and encourage each other and continued to cheer our teammates on for the whole session!

The Dragon Machine by Helen Ward is our focus book in English for this half term. We began by exploring a picture of some shiny, scaly dragon eggs and discussing what we thought they were, were they had come from and what was going to happen to them. We then used amazing vocabulary to write our own noun phrases to describe how they looked. We made sure to use lots of adjectives to make it really interesting. We also made predictions about what we thought the story would be about. We worked in groups to critically analyse picture clues and what they told us about the story. Our creative hats came out when we started to write our ideas down.

We started our new topic of Money in Maths where we recognised each coin and what it was worth. We learned ways to count money and how it is easier to start with the bigger coins. We even got to compare the weight of a 20p vs twenty 1p coins to see how it would be better to have less coins in our purses and wallets. We will continue this topic next week, looking at comparing money, as well as various ways we can make up a pound.

In Science, we began our exciting topic of ‘Young Gardeners’ where we explored the different aspects that a plant needs to stay healthy. We used critical thinking to discuss why a plant needs certain elements like water and the sun to stay healthy. We compared a healthy plant with an unhealthy plant and thought about why this had happened and what we could do to keep it healthy.

In Religion, we explored what the word ‘thankful’ means and discussed things that we are thankful for in life. We looked at the story of Jesus and the blessed children, looking at Jesus’ actions throughout the story and how he was a friend to everyone.

 Reminders:
