What a fantastic start to the final term!

This week, we started our new, final text in English, ‘Zeraffa Giraffa’. Before we started reading, we explored our new STAR vocabulary, using our dictionaries to define the words and creating a glossary for future reference. After, we were given a range of clues about our new text and worked together to predict what the book was about. When we finally began to read our story, we were amazed to learn that it was a story, based on a true event that occurred hundreds of years ago. We cannot wait to find out more about this interesting giraffe.

In Maths, we continued with our topic on Time, focusing on reading time to the nearest minute, and recognising that time has an a.m. and p.m. This has been a tricky topic, but using small practical clocks to support us we were able to tackle it head on. Next week, we will continue to look at Time paying special attention to duration.

In Reading, we began our new story ‘Egyptian Cinderella’. Similar to English, we created our own picture glossary for STAR vocabulary that will appear over the next few weeks. After, we began to read, making connections with our previous topic on Egyptians, and the fairy tale Cinderella. We were shocked at how servants and slaves were treated differently at this time and how people were taken from other countries to work.

This story linked nicely to our Geography topic, ‘Why was the River Nile so important?’. Before we look into this topic in more detail we reflected on our previous learning and using our circle map, we wrote down facts we already know about the River Nile.

In Art, we investigated our new focused artist ‘LS Lowry’. We explored some of his incredible art work and the different scenes that he painted. Over the next few weeks we will continue to unpick his art work, and will begin to create our own scenes in a similar style.
