Year 1 Team: Miss A Jones (Class Teacher): Blog items
Date: 22nd Jun 2023 @ 1:36pm
We've had fun in the sun again this week and have absolutly LOVED it! This weather certainly brings out the best in us.
With only four weeks left, we have got a lot to cram in!
In Maths, we continued with our Place Value topic with a specific focus on numbers beyond 50. For this, we had to connect our learning back to Autum Term, using our understanding of numbers bonds to 10 and one more and one less to solve some tricky questions. As well as this, we learnt about the value of the two digit numbers themselves, recognising tens and ones within given numbers. All this learning had to end with an exciting game of Place Value Bingo! A highly competative version we must say!
Our Phonics lessons got underway again this week after having a week off due to the Phonics Screen Check. This meant that all groups started new books, recapping previously taught sounds, red words and green words with a focus on reading speed and pace. After, we all created an excellent piece of writing on the chosen book.
This week, we have also been completing a series of assessments this week in the afternoon. The focus of these assessment are for staff to understand what the children need more support on. These assessements are not shared with parents and are just for teachers.
In PE, we continued to practice for our upcoming sports day which will take place next Wednesday. Our focus was to continue to practice our team work skills for the three legged race as well our sportsmanship for the individual races. PE didn't just stop there though, as it was National Sports Week this week, we got the equipment out at break time, playing tennis, hula hooping and skipping!
On Wednesday afternoon, we had the most wonderful surprise, a magician came to visit! We were amazed by his wonderful performance which saw members of our class get involved. We loved having a good giggle with him and the rest of the school. Thank you so much to Mrs Pringle for organising such an incredible treat!
Reminders
- Sports Day is next Wednesday 28th June between 1pm and 1:30pm. Please ensure that all children bring a hat to school this day as well as an additonal water bottle, where possible.
- Summer Fair will take place on Friday 30th June, the children will attend the fair with their classes first, they will need to be picked up from their class door before returning to the fair with their parents, should parents wish too.
- It is incredibly warm at the moment, please can we ask ALL children to have a water bottle and hat with their each day.
- School will close for summer on Wednesday 19th July at 1pm.
Date: 18th Jun 2023 @ 2:06pm
An exceptionally hot week, for an exceptional class!
We wanted to start of by first explaining how proud we are of all the children in Year 1, who this week completed their Phonics Screen Check (unbeknown to them!). The children all worked hard to read, segment and blend the words back together and regardless of whether they 'pass', we are proud of all the hard work they have put in this week, and throughout the year! Keep shining Year 1, in everything you do.
In Maths, we completed the first of our termly assessments, and the children worked, again, extremely hard with this. They will complete their second assessment next week along with two reading assessments. In additon to this assessment, the chidlren started our new topic, Place Value to 100. The children worked hard to put their prior knowledge to use, connecting their learnnig back to our previous place value topic to remind them of the number order and the value of tens and ones. They will continue with this topic next week.
In PE we practiced for our upcoming sport day, which will take place on Wedneday 28th June, working together and supporting each other in each activity such as the three legged race, which proved trickier than we thought especially if you were teamed up with Miss Jones!
On Friday, we had an extra specail treat, when Mrs Molloy brought in her garden sprinkler! We LOVED running through it too cool down, which was made even better when Miss Jones handed out the ice pops! From all of us here in Year 1, we hope you have a delightful weekend and enjoy this incredible weather!
Reminders:
- PE lessons take place every Tuesday and Wednesday this term.
- Please can you ensure that children are sent to school with water bottles, hats and sun cream.
- Reading books should be returned every Friday morning ready to be swapped.
Date: 3rd Jun 2023 @ 6:28pm
And, just like that, we have started our final term in Year 1 and what an adventure we will have!
We had the most incredible time on our school trip to Tatton Park on Thursday, where we were able to travel back in time to the Victorian Era and experience what life was like back then. We loved donning tradtional Vicotrian clothing and acting out parts of their every day life from school to cleaning, even the teachers got involved! This was the perfect start to our new History topic, ' Is it better to be a child now than in the past?'. As the weeks progress, we will use our experience from this trip as well as aretefacts to compare life now, and then.
In Maths, we started, and finished, our new topic, Geometry, exploring the postion and direction of various objects describing postitons after they are moved. Next week, we will visit our topic on Place Value, exploring numbers to 100.
We explored materials and textures in Art and investigated how different one can affect the other. This week, we explored how you can create different patterns and pictures using a range of different medium such as; paper, tissue paper and paint. We are delighted with how our creations turned out.
The summer weather brought with it the summer sports and we absolutly loved getting outside to complete both Athletics and Striking and Feilding. In Athletics, we completed a range of different activities in preparation for Sports Day from running races to the egg and spoon. It was very exciting. As well as this, we practiced hitting, large and small balls, with a variuos bats exploring how the different ones create more power or 'stirke' to move the ball across the field.
We explored summer in Science as well, comparing our current glorious summer weather to the previous seasons. We discussed we must keep ourselves safe in the sun and identified various items that we shoud used as a result.
Reminders
- Please can you ensure that children are sent to school with water bottles, hats and suncream. The weather is getting hotter and we do not have the resources to supply the children with the above. Please also note that staff are unable to apply suncream to children so please can you practice with your child at home.
- Next week the children will complete their Phonics Screen Check, the check itself will be seamless and the children will be unaware of it compared to other assessments. As stated previously, we will not be able to share results with you until the reports due to the government deciding on the pass score. TO support your child, please complete the videos which have been shared with you over School Spider.
- PE days will continue to be on a Tuesday and Wednesday each week, please ensure children are dress appropriotely for their lesson.
Date: 23rd May 2023 @ 7:20am
What an incredible term we have had together, roll on the next and final one of the year! I cannot beleive we only have 6 weeks left until Year 2!
In Maths, we finished our topic on Fractions and showed an excellent understanding in our recap session. We were able to put our understanding of halves and quarters to the test and apply it to both practical and written questions. Next term, we will explore Geometry in our first week back exploring position and direction.
In Phonics, Children were reassessed by myself, Miss Jones, and regrouped accordingly. As well as this we continued to prepare for the Phonics Screen Check focusing on embedding those last few sounds and reading longer words. Children will not get books for over half term, please refer to the additonal videos.
We finished off our Art topic on Henri Rosseau by focusing on his use of bright colours and obsession with animals by exploring some of his most popular pieces of Art. We soon learnt that Rosseau liked to hide animals in his art work hiding them in his landscapes by using vibrant coloured leaves as a disguise. We then used this understanding of his artwork, to create our own animal masks inspired by his colours and designs.
We finished off our topic on 'Farms', in Geography, and explored the different farms around us due to our enviorment.
On Thursday, we completed 'Computing Day'. This term, we focused on creating our own books and developed our understanding of uploading images/downloading images and how to add text to a document. As well as this, we loved learning about QR codes and how we can used them to download images and resources.
Finally, from all of us here in Year 1, we hope you all have a wonderful and restful half term and cannot wait to see you in a weeks time, ready for our final six weeks. Please see the Virtual Classroom attached for resources to support you further, should you wish.

In RE, we were very lucky this week to have the wonderful Reverand Gordon visit from St Peter's Church, he talked to the children about Baptism in the Christian faith and discussed why a vicar carries out the different parts of the service. After, he allowed some of the children to take part in a 'mini' baptism on two very special dolls.
In Maths, we have been finishing out topic on fractions and explored the differences between fractions and divsion. Next week, we will finish this topic and will recap this topic accordingly.
We became artists again in this week and created our own natural landscape pictures based on our focus artist, Henri Rousseau. We discussed how landscape does not only mean turning the page but how it could also describe the background or scenery. We then compared this to our previous portrait work and identified similarites and differences.
In Geogrpahy, we explored map reading, and using clues we were able to explore maps of a farm and identifty the various features of the farm. It was a highly exciting activity which saw an incredible amount of team work!
You may also have noticed the installation of our Community Book Swap Box here at Trinity St. Peter's. This has been installed in memory of Margaret Blake, a past Governor here at TSP, who loved coming in to school and hearing children read. It is located on the wall (near the defibrillator) and the idea is for the whole community (adults and children) to use this book swap box so we can share our love for reading with all!

Date: 9th May 2023 @ 10:53pm
We certainly hit the high notes this week in, Year 1!
In Maths, we started our new topic, Fractions, and began the week exploring 'half' and 'whole'. We disccovered that for something to be cut in half, we must ensure that the two peices are equal and to have a whole, we must have both of the equal pieces. To helps us understand this further, we got hands on, and using playdough, we created our own shapes carefully cutting them in half to ensure both pieces are equal. As the week progressed, we started to look at halfing amounts and groups of objects. Next week, we will continue with this topic by finding a half of given objects before moving onto identifying and recognising quaters.
In Phonics, we have perservered with some of the more tricky sounds which as supported our fluency whilst reading. This week we developed our poetry skills, creating our own Acrsostic Poems for the Young Writers Competition. This poems will now be sent off with the hope that one of us will be the lucky winner or the competiton and/or they end up in their poetry book!
In Geography, we continued to explore Farms, we focused this week on understanding the differnet buildings and their purpose. This helped us understand the roles taken on by the farmers themselves.
On Friday, we ventured to Liverpool City Centre for an epic day our exploring the Eurovision displays and Euro Village. Here, we saw some incredible performers, dancing and singing as well as some specially designed statutes and musical stairs. Your behaviour was exceptional, Year 1, you truly were a credit to the school.
We hope thay you all have a wonderful weekend!

Year 1, you have been incredible this week!
On Wednesday, we had a special visit from the team at Rubicon for a special scooting session. We began by honing in on our scooting skills before moving onto some extra cool tricks! Because we were so good on the scooters, we were able to progress onto the skateboards. Here, we learnt how to not only balance on the skateboard, but to jump, and flick the board with and without support! It was truly an incredible experience, one we hope to repeat again!
In PE, we continued with our topic, Yoga, focusing on developing our breathing as we move through a sequence of movements. For this, we had to carefully breathe in and out at the correct points so we could hold our balances carefully, before calmly moving into the next pose.
In Maths, we finished our Multiplication and Division topic. We learnt what the phrase ‘shared equally’ meant and carefully executed this concept using concrete resources. As well as this, we recapped what doubling meant and doubled numbers up to 20! Next week, we will start our new topic on Fractions, where we will begin by halving shapes and groups of objects.
In Art, we continued with our topic on Henri Rousseau, today, we focused on drawing still objects such as flowers and exploring adding detail by adding colour through shading. Next week, we will learn about the difference between portrait and landscape, and begin to design our own pictures accordingly.
On Friday, as a school and as a class, we marked King Charles III’s coronation. We started the day by taking part in a whole school assembly, where we were able to sing our coronation song. After, we designed and created our own crowns ready for our coronation picnic! In the afternoon, we wrote letters to King Charles and cannot wait t to see if he replies!

We have had another egg-cellent week in Year 1!
This week has been incredibly busy and full of excitement! We must start by discussing the highlight of the week, which saw a special package delivered to class on Thursday morning… using several clues the class had to guess what was hidden in the box and were delighted to find out that we had our very own duck eggs! We cannot wait for them to hatch and watch them grow over the next half term, after which, they will return to Croxteth Farm with their families.
The addition of ducks to class, links to our Geography topic, Farms, where over the next few weeks we will learn about not only the different types of farms, like we did this week, but also the types of animals that live there, their role in society and also how the weather and seasons affect life on a farm. This week, we focused on understanding the difference between the three main types of farms, arable, dairy and livestock.
In Maths, we continued with our topic on Multiplication and Division, focusing on adding equal groups together and writing the corresponding number sentences. We began this learning using practical resources to ensure the concept was embedded, before moving onto some more tricky abstract reasoning problems. Next week, we will finish off this topic by exploring doubles and making equal groups by grouping and sharing.
In Art, we continued to look at the artist, Henri Rousseau, and created our own plants paintings inspired by his work. We did this using leaves and flower from our outdoor area and printing them into our books.
In Science, we learnt about invertebrates and were shocked to learn how many differenet species were out there. It blew our minds to learn that the giant squid, was in fact an invertebrate. After, we explored our bug hotel to see if we could find any!
Reminders
- School will reopen on Tuesday 2nd May, after the bank holiday.
- Please ensure that you send your child to school with a water bottle, especially as the days are getting warmer.
- The Phonics Screen Check will take place the week beginning 12th Please watch the virtual classroom videos to support their learning further.

What a brilliant start to the final term of the year!
We started our week, like any other week, with a new book in Phonics regardless of our group. Children have been working hard to carefully learn the remaining few sounds, and or, revise previous sounds, applying this knowledge to both our reading and writing. We will continue to focus on developing our knowledge as the weeks progress.
In Maths, we began our new topic, Multiplication and Division, with a special focus on the 2-, 5- and 10-times tables as well as understanding and making equal groups. The children worked hard to revise previous knowledge whilst applying this to our new concept. Next week, we will continue to focus on this and will look at adding equal groups, arrays, and doubles.
In RE, we recapped the Easter story to consolidate our previous learning. We were able to connect our learning back and recall STAR vocab such as ‘Maundy Thursday’ and ‘Shrove Tuesday’. After, we thought critically about how Jesus’ disciples might have felt at his resurrection and how we would feel if we were there. Next week, we will start our new topic, ‘Why is Baptism Special?’
In Art, we also began our new topic which is based on the artist, ‘Henri Rousseau’. We started this topic by exploring their art work in detail before creating a fact file based on their life.
Sadly, on Friday we had to say goodbye to our lovely student teacher, Miss McNamara, who has been with us since February. I know that staff, and children alike, will miss her dearly but wish her the best of luck in her future career.
Reminders
- Please see the details shared regarding the Phonics Screen Check which will take place the week beginning 12th June. Please contact Miss Jones via on the school email should you have any questions.
- PE days will remain the same throughout the summer term for Year 1, this will be a Wednesday and Thursday.

What an egg-cellent end the spring term!
We have truly had the most exciting week full of laughter, excitement and a fair amount of chocolate. We must however, start by acknowledge and celebrating the children, on their incredible performance at church on Thursday. They did themselves, and the school proud, with their brilliant singing especially when the wrong version of the song came on!
In Maths, we finished off our topic on Measurement. We focused on mass and volume and explored how objects can contain different amounts, depending on what is being put in it. For example, a jug may take 5 cups of water but 12 cubes. It was a great topic to investigate and we loved getting hands on. Next term, we will start by looking at multiplication and division starting with counting in 2s, 5s and 10s. After, we will explore making equal groups and adding equal groups together.
This week in Phonics, the children have all been reassessed for Phonics. Some children will be moving onto a different colour book, whereas others will be staying on the same colour. This is due to develop children’s fluency and pace. After half term, all children will receive weekly Phonics videos to support their learning at home in preparation for the Phonics screen check.
This week we completed our computing topic, animations. After, we carefully drew our own unique characters, before animating the with the Chatterbox app. This allowed them to bring their creations to life by adding speech. We loved sharing these with our friends, with many of them bringing on the giggles.
For or DT topic this term, ‘Does something need to be alive to move?’, we created Easter eggs cards that open and closed using split pins. Although the endless cutting out was a bit tiring, we loved our final creations and hope you all do too!
The week ended with a surprise visit from the Easter Bunny himself, who brought chocolate along with his crazy dance moves. We hip-hopped around the classroom with him which certainly brought on the Easter spirt.
From all of us here in Year 1, Happy Easter. we hope you have a wonderful half term filled with love and laughter. See you all in the summer term!

How are we in the penultimate week of Spring Term? Where has this term, and year, gone?
This week, the children in Year 1 have been incredible, they sparkled on our school trip to the Maritime Museum, demonstrating exemplary behaviour throughout. The staff and the museum went out of their way to commend their impeccable behaviour. Well done, Year 1.
The school trip was certainly the highlight of the week and we loved exploring the museum in great detail, learning first, about the history of Liverpool Docks, before learning about the role of not only the city, but the people, in the creation and building of the world famous, Titanic. Using the story, ‘Polar the Titanic Bear’ written by Daisy Corning Stone Spedden, a survivor, we were able to go back in time and imagine, with props, what it would be like to be on the Titanic before it sank, as well as learning interesting facts that even Miss Jones didn’t know! It was a truly wonderful experience, one we will all treasure forever.
In Maths, we continued with our topic on ‘measurement’ focusing on weight, mass and volume. Through a series of practical activities, we were able to understand the vocabulary ‘heavier’ and ‘lighter’. After, we measured items using non-standard unit of measurements and compared them using our previous learnt vocabulary. Next week, we will continue to explore this topic with a focus on measuring volume in more detail using practical activities to support us.
We continued with our Art topic, Animal Art, and focused on developing our own patterns inspired by other cultures and counties. We took time to carefully decorate elephants using Indian inspired patterns.
For Science, we investigated the 5 main animal categories, excluding insects, learning about their characteristics before grouping animals accordingly.
Reminders
- Please be reminded that school finishes next Friday at 1pm.
- Children should come to school with their water bottle.
Date: 15th Mar 2023 @ 3:23pm
This week has been full of events for Year 1, and it has been so much fun!
We continue to persevere in Phonics, developing our understanding of the sounds applying them to our writing. It is truly wonderful to see how hard you all work and the incredible progress you have all made. Keep working hard, Year 1!
In Maths, we began our new topic, Measurement. We connected our learning back to Reception and recapped the important words; taller, shorter, and longer. We began by comparing objects using this language, before moving onto measuring objects with non-standard units of measure such as cubes, teddy bears and pencils. We then developed this skill further and moved onto using rulers to measure, practicing reading the rulers accurately ensuring we line the objects up carefully.
On Wednesday, we created our very own lava lamps, as we joined the rest of the school in celebrating British Science Week with a theme surrounding the weird and wonderful creations in George’s Marvellous Medicine. We loved watching the salt mix with the oil, making it heavier and therefore creating our very lamps of various colour.
Red Nose Day arrived in Year 1 on Friday, and we loved marking this day with some extra special activities all of which had a 'red' theme! We reflected on the importance of this day, and how this organisation helps people from around the world.
Finally, from everyone here in Year 1, we want to wish all of the important, inspirational women who surround us all, a very Happy Mother's Day, we hope you have a fantastic weekend full of love!
Reminders
- Can we please ask any parents who have not already done so, to pay for the school trip which will take place on Thursday 23rd March.
Date: 10th Mar 2023 @ 1:20pm
The weather certainly added to our magical week, and we loved playing in the snow!
We also celebrated two key dates in our academic calendar, ‘Fairtrade Fortnight’ and ‘International Woman’s Day’. To mark Fairtrade Fortnight, we began by discussing the concept of fair, and how everyone, regardless of their gender or nationality, should be treated equally. We then learnt that we can identify fairtrade produce using the special symbol and using fairtrade sugar, we created our very own lemonade.
For International Woman’s Day, on Wednesday, we started by reflecting on the important women in our life. It was wonderful to see women of all ages being identified, old and young, and for a vast number of reasons. Later that day, we focused on a famous, influential female artist, Frida Kahol and her incredible self-portraits. We reflected on her work, connecting back to our previous topic on portraits, and our current topic on animals, to create our very own work inspired by Frida.
This week, the children have worked hard to complete assessments to showcase their learning so far this year. Our school value Hope was certainly achieved by all as they tried their best and were determined to complete their assessments to the best of their ability.
In Science, we continued with our focus on plants, building on on prior knowledge of flower plants and exploring trees. We started by identifying the two types of tress; evergreen and deciduous before exploring the different functions of the tree.
Reminders
- Please can I ask all parents to read the letter sent on Wednesday regarding the school trip on the 23rd March.
- Please can all children bring a small plastic bottle in by next Wednesday in preparation for British Science Week.
Date: 3rd Mar 2023 @ 8:39am
If you came into Year 1 this week, you would have been in for a surprise!
We have had the most incredible week in school, full of giggles, smiles and a lot of fun.
In Maths, we began the week by recapping counting large groups of numbers by grouping them into groups of 5 and 10s. This helped us count large numbers quickly and efficiently. Later, we focused on adding missing numbers to a number line, looking carefully at what numbers we already had, the integer, before applying the missing numbers. Next week, we will continue to investigate this whilst also completing a series of mini assessments.
In Science, we investigated flowering plants. We started by looking at real plants, looking at the different parts and discussing their function. We then used labels to label the plants different parts. After, so not to waste them, we planted them in our new playground, they look beautiful.
In Art, we continued our topic on ‘Animal Art’ looking at the colours and patterns in African animals. We then recreated our very own animal print, based on one of these animals, before sticking its silhouette on top to compare the pattern.
On Thursday, the class was full of wonderful, bright costumes as we came together to celebrate World Book Day. It was a delight to see so many children taking part dressed in their favourite characters costumes which enabled the children to bring their favourite books alive. In the morning, we came across a damaged book surrounded by tape and some mysterious glittery footprints coming from the pages. We were told that a character had escaped and had been causing trouble around the school, it was our job to use the clues to find out which of the suspects, the teachers, was our missing character. It turned out to be… Mrs Molloy, the lion! After, we had our very own ‘Teddy Bears Picnic’, where we all got to munch on delicious cakes and biscuits and juice whilst reading our books to our teddy bears. It was a truly wonderful.
Date: 24th Feb 2023 @ 5:05pm
What an incredible week back, it’s been flipping incredible!
In Science we got stuck in and hands on with a variety of animal ‘poo’ to help us identify what each animal ate in order to classify them into one of the following groups: herbivore, omnivore, and carnivore. After, we identified a range of animals that belong to each of these group and were shocked to learn that a kingfisher was a carnivore!
The animal theme continued into our Art lesson, where we explored a range of British animals as part of our focus on ‘Observational Drawings’. We discussed how when we are completing observational drawings, it is key that we continue to look back at out object, or drawing, before sketching. We also connected our learning back to before half term and reminded ourselves of the importance of small gentle strokes. We started by identifying the different colours we could see in each animal, before exploring the different shapes that make up the body of the animal. After, using all of this information, we sketched our own versions of British animals.
In Maths, we started our new topic on Place Value, exploring number to 50. We started the week by counting a range of objects by grouping them first. We started by grouping them into groups of 10, counting the number of groups as well as how many more we have. It has proven to be a tricky concept for all of us. Next week, we will move onto counting in groups up the number line as well as doubles and near doubles.
In RE, we began our new topic on Easter, and what perfect timing. We explored the true meaning of Pancake Day, Shrove Tuesday, and how it is the beginning of the Christian period of Lent. We loved sampling tasty pancakes whilst also committing to either giving something up or making a promise during that period of time.
Reminders
- Please bring your book folders each Thursday to ensure it is in school ready to be changed on Friday.
- Please remember that it is World Book Day on Thursday 2nd Where possible please also bring the book with your chose character in.

We have had a busy week again here in, Year 1!
We started our week doing our coats and taking a trip to the local, family run coffee shop, Kiosk Coffee, where we learnt all about what it takes to run the shop and how best to serve customers. We found out that each day they make fresh cakes and grind the coffee beans down to make coffee powder, after, we were lucky enough to sample some of their delicious brownies and juice. Back at school, we applied this newfound knowledge to our own role play coffee shop. We have never seen such good customer service!
In Maths, we have been focusing on developing our understanding using concrete resources as well as taking it outside, in our new learning environment. We started by cementing our knowledge of numbers up to 20, connecting our learning back to last week, and focusing on the model of ten and a bit with regards to our ten frames. We the focused on the number 20 itself. We quickly identified that to make 20, we needed two full ten frames, and set off to find objects from our outdoor area to fill it, some of us even chose snowballs as an object. To help us, we discussed with our partners how many more we needed each time. Later in the week, we connected our learning back to September, and focused on finding one more and one less than given numbers up to 20 using number tracks.
In Phonics, we continued to explore our new stories, in our groups, working hard to develop our sentences ensuring we are remembering our punctuation.
In RE, we listened to the bible story ‘The Calling of the Disciples’ after which, using role play, we recreated the story using a net and some beanbags. We then reflected on why Jesus chose his friends like this, and how they might have felt when he spoke to them and what makes a good friend. Together, we wrote words and drew pictures on our own person to depict a ‘good friend’.
This week in Geography, we were incredibly fortunate to link our new country, China, to special and unique annual celebration, Chinese New Year. We learnt about some of their unique traditions and customs whilst also sampling food and creating our own fortune cookies, with the help of Year 4!
In PE, we continued our Gymnastics journey, developing our understanding of balances from last week and working together to make a sequence using movement and balances.
A huge thank you to all the parents that attended our Parent Teacher Meetings this week, it was wonderful to see you all.
Reminders
- Please can I direct parents again, to the school uniform policy, it is important that children are wearing the correct uniform each day.
- Book bags and folders need to be returned to school on Thursday ready to be swapped and returned to you by Friday afternoon. If your child does not bring their book back, we are unable to issue them with a new one.

What an incredible week we have had in Year 1!
This week in Geography, we have been focusing on a new country, Austraila. We loved learning about the different animals, cultures and famous landmarks. We were shocked to learn that Christmas happens in their Summer not Winter! After, we created circle maps to record all the different facts we had learnt.
In Maths, we began to explore Place Value again, this time to 20. Before we moved past 10, we connected our learnig back to before Christmas and recalled our number bonds within 10 whilst also solving reasoning problems. We then used this knowledge, to help us with out number knowledge to 20, focusing on the concept of 10 and a bit. To help us, we have been practicing using a range of resources such as tens frames, Deines and Rekenrek. We will continue this topic next week, focusing on the numbers 17,18,19 and 20.
In Phonics, some groups moved onto a new book whilst other revisited books from before Christmas in order to develop our fluency and expression. Some children will have moved groups whilst others have stayed in the same groups but have a new teacher. We are so impressed with all the children and their sound retention. Keep it up, Year 1!
We continued to look at portraits in Art but this time of ourselves. We started the lesson by thinking of one thing from home that makes us special or we find special, drawing and labelling it. After, we identifed one thing in school we enjoyed to use, then Miss Jones took a picture of us. Some children chose objects like the football or a book, whilst other chose friends. Once our photo was taken, we stuck it in our books and described what we liked about our picture and explained why.
In PE, we continued with our topics 'Team Building' and Gymnastics. In our Team Building lesson, we took it in turns to blindfold our partners, whilst giving them careful instructions to move around the classroom without bumping into anyone. In Gymnastics, we connected our learning back to last week, moving around the hall like various animals before developing our poses. We learnt several new poses this week and worked hard with our partners, taking it in turns to pose and give feedback.
Finally, on Friday we were given the fantastic news that our new playground is ready for us to use as of Monday. We all went our for a quick look and loved learning about the different resources that have been added. Our new stage was a firm favourite!
Reminders
- The link for Parent Teacher Meetings will close on Monday 16th January at 6pm.
- Parents Teachers Meetings will take place in the hall and will take place over the next three weeks, slots are 10 minutes long and are designed for you to look at your children's books whilst also discussing their progress. Although this week has only been short, it certainly has been a brilliant start to the New Year and the Spring Term!
In Maths, we finished off our Geometry Topic which has been carried over from the Autumn Term to ensure information has been retained and embedded. The children have loved reinvestigating 3D and 2D shapes, identifying them both around the classroom and around the school without special 'Maths Glasses' on. We even had a go at making our very own 2D shapes with straws and discussed how it was much hard to make a circle due to it having 1 curved side. In Maths, we have also continued our NCTEM journey, which focuses on developing mathematical fluency using Rekenrek and additional aids such as tens frames. The children have loved taking part in this journey so far.
As part of our topic ‘Around the World’, we ventured to France, enjoying a fantastic ‘French Breakfast’ tasting some traditional, delicious cuisine. We explored the city of Paris, investigating famous landmarks and learning to speak French. It was such brilliant fun for all, even the teachers who dressed to the occasion!
In Art, we discussed the word ‘portrait’ and explored an array of portraits from famous artists. We were shocked that this was, at one point, the only way people could see a ‘picture’ of someone else before cameras were invented. After, we compared various portraits, idenitifyig which portraits we liked and why.
On Friday afternoon, we were fortunate enough to take part in an interacting Judo assembly. We gasped as they showed us a range of holds and moves and were delighted to learn that this could be an option for some of us in the coming weeks. However, the highlight of our week has got to be the development of our fantastic, new playground! We have loved watching it develop and the team have been fantastic allowing us to ask insightful questions and learn about the construction.
Reminders and Notices
- PE days continue to be on a Wednesday and Thursday.
- Children can take part in Judo Club each week, which will take place every Friday during lunchtime. If you would like your child to take part in this club, please sign up via the letter sent out to parents

Where has that term gone? We cannot believe that it is time to finish for Christmas already.
Year 1 have a fun-packed, Christmas filled final week in school. We started our week with a 'Movie Morning' with tasty treats and delicious refreshments enjoyed by all thanks to Team TSP. On Tuesday, we once again jonied forces in our house teams an took part in a Christmas Sing Off. It ws highly competative and increbily enjoyable. On Wednesday, we enjoyed our Christmas Dinner as a class, even the teachers joined us in the hall for a delicious meal and to help pull the crackers. We had a busy day on Thursday, starting the day by supporting Year 2 with the Nativity performance as part of the KS1 Church Service. Later that day, some very cheeky elves surrprised us, causing havoc on our playground and even in our classroom! Finally, the whole school came together to watch the incredible, Churches Together Nativity, a huge thank you to the cast.
In addition to the wonderful Christmas events, Year 1, completed two fabulous topic days, Computing and DT. For computing, the cihldren explored what a computer was, navigating the different parts and functions whilst also using an Ipad. For DT, the children designed and created their own houses using a variety of materials in school. After, they reflected on their house and discussed what they would have done differently next time as well as one thing they loved about their house. Well done, Year 1.

This week has been truly magical here in Year 1, and we are so proud of you all.
At the start of the week, we were blown away by the children incredible peformance in not one but two Nativities to their parents, not including the two additonal performances to Year 5 and 6. All the children took part, saying their lines loudly and clearly for all to hear. In addition to this, the children had to act, whilst singing 6 different songs at the appropriate time, carrying on even when the music stopped. We could not be more proud of you all, you all sparkled, showing our values of Hope, Imagine and Enjoy. Never stop sparkling, Year 1!
In Maths, we used our addition and subtraction knowledge to solve some festive colour by number problems and we were blown away at how amazing the whole of Year 1 were at recalling their number facts to 10. Next week, we will continue to cement this knowledge before moving onto Geometry.
In Science, we focused on the changing winter weather and loved learning about the tempretures needed to make the rain on the ground freeze. We then vetured outside and explored how the frozen water sparkled like glitter, writing our names in the frost. We will continue our topic of Seasons as the year goes on, exploring Spring and Summer when they too arrive.
In History, we investigated our final famous nurse, Mary Seacole, and learnt how for nearly 100 years, here incredible hard work during the Crimean war was forgotton about. It took several nurses in Jamica to remind the whole world, and especially Britian about her incredible work. We then compared her to Florence Nightingale and discussed what was similar and different about both ladies.
In RE we finished off our topic of Christmas, by exploring how God gave Jesus to us, his people as a gift. We discussed what this meant with children stating that they felt Jesus was sent to us to teach us both love and respect. After, we finished off our own gifts for our parents, which we will hand out next week!
Reminders
- Next Monday is Christmas Movie Day, children are expected to wear school uniforms.
- Next Wednesday, Children will have the opportunity to have Christmas Dinner, if already prearranged.
- KS1 Church Service will take place next Thursday at 9:15am.
- School will finish next Friday, at 1pm prompt.

The Christmas cheer has certainly arrived in Year 1, with special help from our cheeky elf!
This cheeky elf Snowflake arrived early on Thursday morning, and has been up to no good ever since, flying around the classroom and causing a mess. We cannot wait to find out what he gets up to over the weekend. This was not our only hint of Christmas this week, with a trip to the Christmas Extravaganza on Friday. We loved taking part in the various activites, a huge thank you Team TSP for organising such a fantastic event.
In Maths, we have been focusing on Subtraction. We started by practically subtracting objects using resources and even people before moving onto written methods. This allowed us to relate the subtraction sentence to the numbers we wrote down. Next week, we will continue with this topic before moving onto Geometry before the end of term.
In RE, we used our knowledge of the Nativity stroy to help us understand the ideas of gifting. We discussed how gifts don't have to be a physical object but instead can be given through kindness, love and time. We talked about how God gave Jesus to people as a gift to us to forgive us for our mistakes. We then discussed how it feels to give and recive a gift and how both acts can be rewarding.
For History, we reflected on the two nurses from last week, before looking at a new famous nurse, Mary Seacole. We learnt about her journey and plotted her on our timeline. We were interested to see how Mary is less celebrated than Florence but also made a big impact for her time.
Reminders
- On Tuesday, Year 1 will perform their Nativity and 9:20am and 1:20pm. Please ensure you have bought tickets for the events in advance.
- Please ensure children are coming to school with a water bottle
Date: 25th Nov 2022 @ 4:03pm
What a week we have had here in, Year 1! It has be full of giggles, dancing and joy.
As usual, each morning we have continued our Phonics journey, reading new books and writing fantastic sentences related to our groups story. It truly wonderful to see how much progress all the children have made.
The Nativity practice has continued this week and we cannot wait for you all to come and watch it. The children have been working so hard to say their lines confidently and remember their special dance moves. We can assure you, you will love it!
In History, we had two special visitors come and visit us in school. Florence Nightingale and Jess who is currently training to be a nurse. We were able to ask both nurses questions about their jobs and their training which enabled us to look at their similarities and differences. Did you know that during Florences time, no one was trained? It was truly wonderful to meet both ladies, although one looked slightly more familiar, who knows maybe Miss Jones is related to Florence?
In Science, we continued to investigate the four seasons, focusing this week on the season 'Winter'. We discussed how winter is nearly here and how we need to make sure we are wrapped up warm with the colder temperatures coming. We were able to look at the trees around school and discuss how soon they will be ready for winter, with less and less leaves still being on the tress.
In RE, we started to discuss the very first Christmas by reflecting on our Nativity and the story we are begining to tell.
Reminders
Please can you read the uniform policy which can be found on the school website, it is important that all children are adhering to it.
Please can you practice your child's lines at home so they are super confident before our Nativity on Tuesday the 6th November.
Next Friday is the Christmas Extravaganza, and therefore, mufti.
On Wednesaday, children will have the opportunity to visit the present room. Please ensure you have requested this on school money.
Date: 16th Nov 2022 @ 2:01pm
Our week has truly been filled with kindness and we hope you have had a wonderful week too!
We started our week by looking at the story ‘Chrysanthemum’ by Keven Henkes as part of ‘Anti-Bullying Week’. The story looked at how children in her class were unkind to her because they did not like her unusual name and how this made her feel ashamed and sad until their most favourite music teacher told the class how she too was named after a flower. Reflecting on this story, we passed our class heart around the circle, crumpling it up whilst saying something unkind that someone might say to us. We were shocked with how quickly our heart was crushed into a ball. After, we passed the heart back round the circle smoothing the heart out as we said something kind. We noticed that although our heart had returned to its normal shape, it was full of wrinkles. This allowed us to discuss how just because we say kind things, people can still be hurt by words that we have previously said and how we should think carefully before saying unkind things. Continuing with our kindness theme and reflecting in ‘Random Act of Kindness Day’, we each decorated a stone, leaving a kind picture or message. We then went out into the community, leaving the stones out for people to find with the hope that we share our kindness and love with others! Please do tweet us if you find a stone!
This week in History, we were introduced to our first significant person, Florence Nightingale. We were amazed to learn that she was a nurse from 1820, and against her family’s wishes she set off to change nursing forever! We loved taking on her character, telling the doctors to clean their hospitals and wash their hands! However, we were in for a treat later in the week when Florence Nightingale actually visited school! We were able to ask her lots of exciting questions about her life and learn all about her nursing journey.
In Science, we explored our next season, Winter. We reflected on winter last year and discussed how much colder it gets during these months and how it could snow, although it rarely does here! We agreed that winter brings lots of exciting things such as Christmas and New Year but agreed that we must keep ourselves safe by wrapping up warm!
In RE we connected our learning back to previous week and reflected on the Creation story. We looked at the big question ‘Why did God create the world in this order?’ It was brilliant to see so many different answers.
We ended our week on a high with a truly magical Friday. We started the morning by creating Christmas gifts for the school Christmas market. In our houses, we created a wide range of gifts and loved joining children from across the school. In the afternoon, we celebrated Children in Need by making biscuits to share with our families.
From all of us hear in Year 1, we hope you have a wonderful weekend!
Reminders
- Children should come to school with their own water bottles.
- Tickets for the Year 1 Nativity are on sale now and can be purchased on ‘School Money’.
- Over the coming weeks, children will receive lines for the school Nativity, please can we ask you to practise these at home with your child.
Date: 9th Nov 2022 @ 2:11pm
We’ve had another fantastic week of learning in Year 1!
In RE, we continued to look at the Christian creation story and how he was careful in selecting what to add to our world. After, we thought about what we would like to add and what could make our world a better place. We were shocked to learn that we all had similar ideas with lots of ideas linking to our Collective Worship value, ‘Peace’. This meant that we could also identify and celebrate what makes us unique and special and recognise that we are all different but similar in lots of ways and how that is okay.
Before we started our new history topic, we took time unpick what the words ‘past’ and ‘present’ means. We talked about how some elements of the past we can remember, such as the death of Queen Elizabeth II but how other periods in the past, such as when she became queen, we couldn’t remember as we were not born yet. We then came up with different ways in which we could find out about the past such as talking to someone from the past, researching on the computer, reading books, and even looking at real life objects known as artefacts.
In Maths, we continued with our number bonds within 10. We started the week by writing number facts for given numbers before working together to write our own number sentences using dice. To finish the week, we looked at ‘adding more’ starting with a base number before adding an additional number, from a dice. To help us, we used our number lines and tens frames to help us.
In Science, we started looking at the 4 seasons and the weather associated with each season. We focused on our current season, Autumn, taking ourselves on an autumn walk around school and collecting items to create our own autumnal art and also to compare it to other seasons in the future. We discussed how the weather is damper this time of year, and how the lots of trees lose their leaves.
We have started to learn our Nativity songs this week ready for our two performances on the 6th December. We will continue to practice our songs and will receive our parts next week.
On Friday, we marked Rememberence Day in our class. We paused and reflected on the day and discussed why we wear a poppy and remember people who have fallen in war. Throughout the week we have reflected on this importance day, creating a poppy wreath for the church's memorial.
We ended the week on an absolute high, watching the school’s Kindness Video. We loved seeing ourselves, friends and families on the screen and couldn’t believe some of the teachers incredible (or questionable) dance moves!
'Love Reading for Kids' have released their early November newsletter. This includes a first look at their Christmas Books and Gift Guide which is full of great ideas for all readers. Books really do make the best presents so please do take a look!
Reminders
- Tickets for the school Nativity performances are now available on School Spider. The performances will take place on Tuesday 6th December at 9:20am and 1:20pm.
- Please can you ensure your child brings a water bottle into school.
- Children may wear Pudsey head bands or badges next week for Children in Need but must wear their full school uniform.
Date: 6th Nov 2022 @ 4:13pm
It truly was a fantastic first week back full of excitement!
We started our new topic in Maths, Addition and Subtraction using part, part whole models to create number sentences. We loved using kung-fu to help us remember our symbols such as the plus sign and equals to sign, watch this space! Next week, we will continue to work on creating number sentences using practical resources.
This week in Phonics, we looked at non-fiction texts learning about a range of things such as bikes and hens! Next week, we will start reading fictions texts again.
In Art, we created our own firework art by finger painting. For this, we had to mix the primary colours to make secondary colours. We also started looking at our nee topic on buildings identifying different shapes and recognising how they fit together.
The highlight of our week has got to be performing for the Kindness video, we have bust a move and danced our way through the week. It has been truly wonderful to see the smiles on the children’s faces and the laughter we have all shared. Keep smiling Year 1.
Reminders:
- Year 1 PE lessons continue to be on a Wednesday and Thursday.
- Please ensure that your child returns their reading books each week either on a Thursday or Friday morning.
- A letter will be shared over the next few days about the Phonics workshop next Wednesday.
