This week for RE, the children learnt how people from other countries celebrate ‘Harvest’ and enjoyed finding these different countries on the Globe. They also began to make connections with how we celebrate Harvest or other special occasions and how other countries celebrate e.g. we have turkey at Christmas in America they have it at ‘Thanksgiving’. The children learnt that in Thailand they use fruit from the harvest to make pictures with and enjoyed making their own pictures using different fruits.

Thank you to all of those who collected and sent in Autumn treasures, in Maths this week we have used the treasures to learn all about making simple patterns. The children loved using these resources and soon learnt how we can make patterns using shapes, colours and even realised that whilst singing the song ‘Heads, shoulders, Knees and Toes’ we were making a pattern.

On Monday we celebrated ‘World Mental Health’ day, the children listened to the story of ‘Simon Sock’. We talked about how it is ok to be different from our friends and that it is good to talk about our feelings to our friends and family. The children ended the day with a walk through our ‘Positivity Pathway’ with our Year 6 buddies.

We also enjoyed a visit from Dom from Active Sefton, who talked to the children all about Healthy eating and making the right choices with our food. The children enjoyed using our senses to explore different fruits before Dom made it into a healthy smoothie for us all to taste.

We all arrived to school on Friday in our Pyjamas to raise money for Alder Hey. Throughout the day the children enjoyed listening to stories with their friends and were even treated to a Hot chocolate and a biscuit!

Well done Reception you have worked very hard this week, enjoy the weekend and we will see you on Monday.

This week for RE, the children spent some time looking at a globe and a variety of different fruits. The children enjoyed discussing their favourite fruit and then thought about if all of the fruits grow in our Country/where we live or where do they grow? We also discussed how do the fruits end up in our shops? We explained that fruits are transported to England where we live on planes and boats. We then enjoyed tasting these different fruits.

We had our first forest school session on Monday, where we recapped Forest school rules, calling sound and sitting circle. We then collected Autumn leaves for our leaf crowns and added any extras to our Autumn exploration tray.

On Thursday we celebrated National Poetry day by listening to Mrs Molloy’s favourite poem ‘Magic shoes’ by Brian Moses. We then spent some time thinking about what magical powers we would like to have and designed our own ‘Magic Shoes’.

With the help of their buddies the children also took part in a 2022 Virgin Money Giving Mini London Marathon by completing laps of the outdoor area and field. We certainly were tired once we had completed it!

This week for RE, we had a visit from Caroline who delivered a Godly Play session to the children, she talked about our skills and talents. The children enjoyed telling Caroline about their skills and talents and then discussed how Jesus asks us to use our skills and talents to help other people.

On Monday we discovered a basket of vegetables in the classroom, these had been left by a little boy called Oliver. We spent some time exploring the vegetables and talking about the vegetables we like to eat, we then were set a challenge of creating different vegetables using the playdough. What an amazing job we did! On Friday we found the story ‘Oliver’s vegetables’ hidden in our classroom, we spent some time tasting the vegetables and then using them to make a tasty soup, what a yummy treat.

We were so excited on Tuesday as we performed with with our Buddies for ‘afternoon tea’, we hope you enjoyed your afternoon as much as we did and especially meeting your child’s year 6 friend.

In Maths we have been learning how to sort different items, we began the week by discovering the story 'Smartest  Giant in Town' and a washing basket full of socks. We quickly had to find all of the matching pairs and put them together. We have also enjoyed sorting buttons and soon realised that there are more that 2 ways to sort things. What great sorting Reception well done!

We have loved our week in Reception and we hope you have a lovely weekend.

This week for RE, with the help of Buddy the children enjoyed exploring their fingerprints. We talked about how everyone’s fingerprint is different and that is why we are unique!

On Wednesday we went to our first ‘WOW’ service of the year. We were celebrating harvest and enjoyed singing two songs to our friends and family. We were very proud of some of the children for reading a prayer. Thank you for all of your food donations, these will be passed onto a local foodbank. Thank you to Caroline and Anne for all your hard work and we are looking forward to our next WOW service already.

We have continued to talk about Encanto this week and focused on our gifts and talents. The children spent some time talking to each other about their talents and what they are good at. We soon realised we are all good at something and how these talents are all different.

We hope you have a lovely weekend and look forward to seeing you on Monday.

This week for RE, the children have enjoyed listening to a story called ‘You are very special’. This provided the children with the opportunity to discuss how they were all very special and that God loves us all the same. The children then enjoyed making their own mirror to look in and remember how special they are!

On Monday we found clues that led us to keys, a glittery trail and a magic green door. We soon discovered it was linked to ‘Encanto’. We took some time to discuss what we knew about the story and enjoyed listening to the song ‘Family Madrigal’, this then led us to thinking more about our families and discussing different family members.

On Tuesday the children enjoyed celebrating ‘Roald Dahl’. The children enjoyed learning about the story ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’. They visited the invention station and collaged their very own fantastic sweet, thinking about what it would taste like and what they would call it! The children also enjoyed exploring their very own ‘Wonka’s Magnificent chocolate Playdough’.

On Thursday we celebrated ‘Dot Day’ and the children looked amazing wearing their spotty clothes! They enjoyed making their own mark using a variety of different media for example paint, crayons, chalk and pencils and were very proud to display it in our very own art gallery. The children also took part in lots of spotty activities including hunt the spot and playing with the parachute. They even took part in singing ‘The Dot’ song and having a try at copying the actions.

We hope you have a lovely weekend and look forward to seeing you on Tuesday.

Welcome back to school after a lovely summer break, it is so lovely to welcome all of the children to our Reception Class. We are very proud of how well they have settled and the amazing week they have had.

We have spent the week exploring the classroom and making new friends. The children enjoyed listening to the story ‘The Great Big book of families’ and ‘Our Class is a Family’ and discussing their families and who lives in their house. The children quickly realised that not all families are the same! The children then enjoyed drawing a picture of their family to be displayed in our home corner.

There was great excitement on Friday afternoon as the children got to meet their Year6 Buddies. The Buddies came into our classroom and we enjoyed showing around our classroom and outdoor area. We ended the afternoon by sharing snack together. We can’t wait to more exciting times ahead.

A poster containing 100 recommended reads for Reception children has been attached to this blog. By providing 100 quality texts at an age appropriate level, this list may be useful when choosing your child's next book. We hope it inspires the children to continue on in their reading journeys whilst further encouraging a lifelong love of books and stories.

It has been a lovely start to the new term, we hope you have a great weekend and look forward to seeing you on Monday

I can’t believe that we have come to the end of our year in Reception.

This has been a wonderful week for us all, spending quality time together and reflecting on our year.

We loved watching our Year 6 buddies rehearsing their show on Monday morning – they were all fantastic and Reception were an amazing audience, entertained from start to finish.

Our final Music in Unison session was on Tuesday where Tara presented each of the children with a certificate to celebrate their progress!  We have all loved our music lessons and I am so proud of how the children have grown in confidence.

Wednesday was our final WOW service at St Peter’s Church.  The children sang beautifully and confidently shared prayers and special memories from the past year.  Thank you to those of you who were able to be there to help make it so special.

We said our final goodbyes to our buddies on Thursday.  We played games on the field and exchanged gifts.  There was so much generosity – thank you.  It was quite emotional, and I am sure that the Reception children will remember their buddies for a long time to come and are already looking forward to when they can be buddies themselves!  We wish all of Year 6 lots of luck and happiness as they move to High School and thank them for their care and kindness they have shown Reception over the year.

So, that is how we have arrived at today!  Thank you so much for the generous gifts and cards.  It has been a privilege to have been your child’s teacher over what has been an amazing year and I know that they will thrive in Year 1.  They are all absolute superstars and I am incredibly proud of them all.  From the Reception team, we wish you a wonderful summer and thank you so much for your support this year.

Farewell!

We can’t believe that we are approaching our final week in Reception.

We have seen some fantastic writing from the children this week as they describe themselves as Superheroes.  They have had some fantastic ideas and designed some wonderful costumes.  Yet again we have been blown away by their independence when writing – what a class of superstars!

We loved our music session with Music in Unison on Tuesday.  The children are developing a great sense of rhythm and have made so much progress over the weeks.  Thank you so much Tara, we are so lucky to have these times with you.

The children have been fascinated by the sycamore seed helicopters which have been landing in our outdoor area.  They have spent time exploring how they fly and have then chose to collect them, along with other leaves, seeds and twigs to create some fantastic nature art work.  What a great idea!

We have spent a lot of time with our buddies this week, reading and reflecting on the past year.  We even played some games in the hall together.  It was lovely to see the relationships the children have with their buddies and how this has grown over the year.  We had a little peep at the Year 6 end of year performance rehearsal – we felt so proud of our buddies and can’t wait to watch a final rehearsal next week.

Each year, there is a summer reading challenge for the children to join either at the local library or online. We encourage all our pupils to take part if possible so they can continue to enjoy their love of reading over the summer and earn rewards as they complete the challenge. Children who complete the challenge receive certificates from the library which are presented in school when they return in September.

National Book Tokens are running a competition where the lucky winner will win £1000 of book tokens for their chosen school and £100 book vouchers for themselves! Please click the link below to quickly enter and nominate our school for the win! Thank you!

Time flies when you are having fun in Reception.

The children have completed some great written work this week based on Supertato, describing him and his characteristics.  Inspired by their writing we have made Superveg, complete with super powers!  It got our fine motor skills working and we saw some fantastic creations!

In maths this week we have introduced odd and even numbers, showing the children how we make a number into pairs to decide if the number is odd or even.  They really enjoyed making odd number aliens and showed us how well they understood these numbers.  The aliens looked very odd!!

On Wednesday the sun shone for Sports Day and we were so excited to go the field.  There was a wonderful crowd to cheer us on and the children made themselves so proud.  They supported each other and tried their best and all the practice paid off!  Thank you to some of our Year 6 buddies who were able to come and help us, you were brilliant.  We celebrated our sporting achievements by relaxing with ice lollies!   Well done Reception for a fantastic Sports Day.

Thank you to Caroline and Anne for our WOW service on Wednesday, where we learned all about Peter and his kindness.  We look forward to seeing you for our final WOW service in 2 weeks time.

Our school book fair is currently taking place in the school portacabin and is open from 3.05pm to 3.30pm each day after school until next Wednesday 6th July. All purchases made, result in more books for our class libraries! Please do support us if you are able to, and thank you to those of you who have supported this event already. Your support is very much appreciated.

We wish you all a lovely weekend and we look forward to seeing you on Monday.

What a lovely sunny week we have had in Reception!

We set up our playdough area as an ice cream shop where the children have really enjoyed letting their imaginations run wild with flavour combinations and selling techniques!  They have served their ice creams to their friends and teachers and worked really well as a team.  If only the ice cream had been real!

We have been learning about sharing quantities in maths, understanding what is fair and when we don’t have enough, how we can make equal groups.  The children quickly understood the idea and how many we need to add or take away to make it fair.  They have been keen to use some doubling facts from last week to help explain their reasoning and I am so impressed with their knowledge!

In our literacy learning , the children have been set the challenge of describing key parts of the story Supertato.  They have approached this with enthusiasm and pride and I am blown away every day by how independent they are becoming with their writing.

On Wednesday the class had the opportunity to spend time in their Year 1 classroom with their new teacher, Miss Jones.  They were all very intrigued about what it would be like and were absolute stars.  It’s hard to believe that we are so close to the end of their year in Reception and I was so proud of how well they coped and asked questions to help them understand what it will be like in September.

Over the week the children have created superhero capes, some using vegetables to print a pattern.  We have loved spending time outside, playing in the water trays, blowing bubbles and reading stories in the shade. We especially enjoyed creating nature art in Forest School and our time at Music in Unison.

We welcomed Caroline this week for Godly Play, where she spoke to the children about the importance of prayers and we learned about the Pretzl Prayer.  Thank you so much for your time Caroline.

Friday was such an exciting day for Reception.  The children looked fantastic in their own clothes ready for the fair.  The children had a great time exploring with their buddies, taking part and winning prizes.  Thank you for all of your support.

We wish you a lovely weekend and look forward to seeing you on Monday.

What a lovely time we have had in the sunshine this week.

The children were all excited to come into the classroom on Monday to find fruits and vegetables in various places, including a tied up coconut and watermelon with plasters over it’s mouth!!  The Evil Pea had struck again!  They were able to match up speech bubbles to each of the characters and have then shown some fantastic writing skills over the week, writing their own versions!

In our maths lessons we have been exploring how to double numbers.  I have been so impressed by how quickly the children have understood and applied their learning in various ways, from painting butterflies to making double numbers for Superhero capes.

Our RE learning has included discussing why Jesus was a special person, learning about miracles and the miracles that Jesus performed.  We listened to stories of Jesus healing ill people and how he showed kindness to all, which led to some wonderful discussions and conversations from the children.

We have spent time over the week understanding the importance of healthy food and brushing our teeth.  Each child has been given a tooth brushing chart to tick off their morning and evening tooth brushing for the next few weeks, when they will be able to bring them back into school to show us all.  Well done for making  a great start Reception.

Continuing our topic of Superheroes and Supertato, the children have created playdough Supertato and the Evil Pea, traps for the Evil Peas as well as designing their own Superheroes.  They are all determined that the Evil Pea will soon be caught!  We had a mini supermarket set up in the playground, just like in the book Supertato.  The children labelled their items and set prices - it was a very popular place to do your weekly shop!

We wish you all a lovely weekend (and Happy Father’s Day) and look forward to seeing you on Monday.

We loved welcoming the children back this week and hearing about their half term break.  We can’t believe we are into our last few weeks of  Reception.

The children arrived on Monday to find some very strange looking vegetables in a bit of a predicament!  They were keen to find clues about who could have done it and why…then we found out!  It was the Evil Pea from our new book, Supertato!  Over the week we have seen some fantastic writing and creative work from the children, to help us try and catch the Evil Pea before he causes any more mischief.  But he has not been found…yet!

In maths we have been looking at subtraction.  We have used different ways to show how we take away and the children have shown a good understanding already!  I have been really proud of how hard they have all worked this week.

We have spent time this week thinking about why we need to eat healthy food and took the chance to taste test some different fruits!  We had some delicious choices, and melon and blackberries came out as the joint winners!  I was really impressed with everyone who tried something new and we had a few children with a new favourite fruit.

Forest school was so much fun this week where the children made mud faces for the trees.  They loved getting their hands dirty and using natural resources to bring their mud faces to life.

In RE we read the story of Jesus feeding the 5000 and talked about the kindness that Jesus showed, caring for all of the people and sharing.  As an act of kindness the children decided to create pictures for their buddies which we will give to them the next time we meet.

We wish you all a lovely weekend and look forward to seeing you on Monday.

We can't believe another half term has come to an end!

This week we have enjoyed learning about the Queen and the special reason for her Platinum Jubilee.  The children have created crowns in the classroom as well as at Forest School to celebrate and have thought about how life has changed over the years since the Queen's coronation.

For RSE week, we have focused on friendship, kindness and family relationships.  The children have shown a great understanding and I have loved hearing their thoughts during whole class discussions.  The importance of their friends and family has been wonderful to hear.  We used the film 'Inside Out' to think about our emotions and times when we have felt joy, sadness, fear, disgust and anger.

Thank you Caroline for our WOW service on Wednesday.  Caroline had her very own TSP buddies to talk about our school values and Jesus' friendships with his disciples.

There was great excitement on Thursday when three of our butterflies emerged from their cocoons!  They will need to be looked after for a couple of days before we can release them.  They are beautiful and have really captured the imagination of the class.

To finish our half term and to celebrate the jubilee, we enjoyed an afternoon picnic with our buddies.  It has been a while since we were all together and it was the perfect way to end the half term.

Love Reading have issued their Mid-May Newsletter; please see many more top-read recommendations you may wish to explore with your child/ren. Happy reading!

We wish you all a great half term break and look forward to seeing you for our final half term in Reception.

It's been another busy week in Reception!

Following on from our trip to Martin Mere last week, we gave the opportunity to the children to independently write about their day.  They have made us so proud and we have seen some fantastic pieces of written work over the course of the week.

We welcomed Caroline for Godly play on Thursday. She talked about the joy of friendship and we learnt about loving each other in the way that Jesus loves us. Thank you for your time Caroline and we will see you next week for WOW.

Our caterpillars have all successfully pupated and we have moved them in to our observation net.  Throughout the week the children have been fascinated by the process involved and we are really hoping that they emerge as butterflies before we break up for half term.

We also enjoyed time in the sunshine, planting our runner beans out from their mini greenhouses.  We talked about the roots and other parts of the plant, and we can now watch them grow even taller in their pots.

In maths this week we have introduced first, then, now stories.  This is another way of helping the children understand number sentences and they have all tried really hard, with some fantastic maths and number writing.

On Friday we celebrated World Bee Day.  We learned that there are lots of different types of bees, what they feed on and why they are so important.  The children have loved creating bee art work and we even tasted some delicious honey!

Please see the book recommendations provided this month from the charity 'Read for Good'. There is a book for all ages from 3-11 to perhaps inspire the next book purchase or local library loan.  Happy reading!

Time had flown this week in Reception!

We have continued with our RE topic of Friendship, learning about Jesus and his disciples and how Jesus showed his friendship to them.  The children were asked to think of qualities which make a good friend and their responses showed us what is important to them in their friendships.

As always, the children loved their time at Music in Unison followed by a trip to Forest school where they were given a choice of activities.  Reflecting on Mental Health Week , we recognise that being out in nature is so important to our mental health and well being.  The children are so excited for their time in the woods each week.

We had a great game of hide and seek with our anteeter this week and challenged the children to have a go at writing a non rhyming poem about where he was hiding.  I am so proud of how hard the children are working with their written work.

Thursday was the best day with our trip to Martin Mere.  The children represented our school with pride and were enthusiastic and keen to participate in everything that we did.  The sun shone and we enjoyed pond dipping and minibeast hunting, as well as some great fun in the playground.  The children were so excited to see the flamingoes and we were lucky to see the baby flamingoes too.  What a treat and it will be a day we remember for a long time!

We wish you all a lovely weekend and we look forward to seeing you on Monday.

This week may have been a short one, but we have done so many wonderful things in Reception!

The children have been excited to look at the progress of their runner bean seeds which they planted last week.  We already have some roots growing and can see changes overnight.  We have also welcomed some caterpillars to our classroom which the children have found fascinating.  They are happily growing each day and we cannot wait to see them go through their life cycle to become beautiful butterflies.

For RE this week we read 'A storm on the lake' and talked about how Jesus was a great friend to the disciples on the boat.  We remembered how Jesus is a friend to us all and took the time to think about what we enjoy doing with our own friends and how lucky we are.  The children all drew a picture of themselves with their friends, telling us all about how their friends make them feel.

In forest school this week, we continued our mini- beast theme by going on a mini-beast hunt.  The children explored the woodland, finding the perfect places for mini-beasts to live - they were really interested in what they found and have continued to look for and find them in our outdoor area.

Our literacy learning has been focused on the anteater from our book.  We learned some interesting facts about anteaters as well as what they eat and then challenged the children to write about their favourite facts.  We were all amazed by the length of their tongues and that they walk on their knuckles!

I have been so impressed with the children in our maths sessions this week.  We have continued our learning of numbers up to 20 this week, focusing on the recognition of numbers 11-20.  We are also learning to count in 5s which the children are really keen to practice and apply whenever and wherever they can.

We wish you all a lovely weekend and we look forward to seeing you on Monday.

We have all enjoyed another busy, fun filled week in Reception!

The children have been really enjoying our class book, 'I'm going to eat this ant' and have created some wonderful food combinations for the anteater to try!  The children wore chef hats to help get them into character when writing menus for the anteater and we had some wonderful ideas, from 'Marshmallow meatball mush' to 'Peas and pepperoni pizza'!  It all sounded very delicious!!

Thank you to Anne and Caroline for our WOW service on Wednesday.  We learned about how Jesus was a good friend when he was alive and how he is now a friend to us all, helping us to be kind, understanding and considerate.

We took our maths outdoors this week and took part in a number hunt for numbers 11-20.  The children were asked to match their pictures to the correct number and it was wonderful to see them working together, counting and reasoning.

Each child has planted a 'magic' runner bean seed this week.  We explored the seed pods and popped out the bean seeds which the children found fascinating.  It was a great opportunity to practice our counting skills too.  We can't wait to watch our beans and see how they grow over the next few weeks!

We were very lucky to have a special PE session from Ultimate Kids on Thursday.  We played the 'naughty neighbour' ball game and the children were so excited  and keen to participate.  Thank you Ultimate Kids, we loved it.

Wishing you all a lovely bank holiday weekend and we look forward to seeing you on Tuesday.

We were so happy to welcome back the children this week and it has felt just like summer in the sunshine!

It has been wonderful to hear all the news from the children's Easter break and I am so proud of how they have settled back into school life.

On Tuesday we discovered tiny footprints all around our classroom and the children were set the challenge of being minibeast detectives.  We had some exciting discoveries underneath tree strumps and in amongst the plants.  The children were then introduced to our new literacy focus book, 'I'm going to eat this ant'  and we started to learn all about Anteaters and what they eat....ants!

Our maths learning has introduced the children to numbers beyond 10, where they are beginning to discover how these numbers are made.  They have worked really hard and are already showing a good understanding - well done Reception.

We spent time learning about Ramadan, Allah, and understanding that Muslims will not eat during daylight hours.  We were able to compare this to Lent and the children were asked to consider how it would feel to give up breakfast, lunch and dinner.

We were so lucky to be joined by our buddies at Forest School this week.  With Earth Day today, the children did a litter pick to show care and pride in our woodland.  It was a lovely way to spend time with each other.

Love Reading have chosen their 'top book picks' for April and May. More, highly-rated children's reads, from a variety of authors for different age ranges, are shared with us all to enjoy.

Easter has arrived in Reception this week!

It is hard to believe that our second term is coming to an end.  I am so incredibly proud of the children, of the little characters they are and how much they have learned and progressed over this past term.  Well done Reception.

We had a shock this week when we discovered the Easter Bunny had been in our classroom overnight, causing all sorts of mischief which was caught on our special Bunny CCTV!  The children were so excited to write all about it and we have seen some fantastic letters to the Easter Bunny Mummy, telling her all about it as well as 'Wanted' posters and letters to the Easter Bunny himself!  Imagine our surprise on Thursday when he appeared in our playground and even left the children an Easter treat to enjoy!  Thank you Easter Bunny!

The children had a fantastic dance session this week with the wonderful Mrs Whitehead.  We are lucky to have one final lesson after the Easter holidays – the children have really embraced dancing, giving it their all and they are so quick to learn the routines.

Thursday's Easter Bonnet Parade was a lovely experience for the children.  They were all so proud of their bonnets and loved walking to church wearing them.  Thank you so much for all the effort that went in to making them at home and thank you Anne and Caroline for a lovely service.  Well done to Reception for their fantastic singing!

We wish you all a lovely Easter break and we look forward to hearing all the children's news on their return to school.

Mrs Mallett and the Reception team.

What a sunny week we have enjoyed in Reception.

We have loved the arrival of some warm spring sunshine this week, enjoying plenty of time outdoors, listening to stories and even doing some of our work.

We celebrated World Poetry Day on Monday, reading poems and listening to rhyming stories.  We have also seen some fantastic writing throughout the week in our Garden Centre and construction area as well as in our newly created Story Station.

The children had a wonderful Tuesday afternoon.  At Music in Unison we had some children performing solos with their glockenspiels.  At Forest School the children worked together to design and build dens and were so proud of what they created!  Thank you Tara and Mrs Bevin for the best afternoon!

On Thursday we welcomed Caroline for Godly Play where the children continued their learning about the Easter Story.  Thank you for coming Caroline and we will see you next week for our Easter WOW Service!

In our literacy learning we have asked the children to use role play to act out our story, Silly Doggy.  They showed great understanding of the story and their acting skills were very impressive.

We introduced number bonds to 10 in our maths learning this week.  The children have been using their fingers, numicon and 10 frames to help them see how  10 can be made and are already keen to apply this knowledge.  We have seen some fantastic number sentences being written independently with the children showing great pride in their work.

Today we welcomed Mummys, Grandmas and Nanas into school for our Mother's Day Celebration.  The children were so excited to perform the songs which they have been rehearsing and it was a perfect way to show how special our mummys and grandmas are, along with the presentation of a tulip and a personal message from each of the children.  I was blown away by how the children performed and have worked so hard to make their singing and actions the best they could be for our special guests.   Thank you to all of you who were able to attend.

Have a lovely weekend and we look forward to seeing you on Monday.

What another busy week for Reception!

In the build up to Easter we have continued our learning of the Easter story, considering how Jesus may have felt.  We have used a wonderful book called The Easter Story by Brian Wildsmith, which has told the story through the eyes of the donkey that Jesus rode into Jerusalem, which has given the children a different perspective to the story of Easter.

It has been a fantastic week for our maths.  The children have shown wonderful skills in subitising and their understanding of numbers to 10.  We have played bingo, sung songs and risen to the challenges set!

This week has been British Science week, with the theme of 'Growing'.  We set up a potion making station which has proven popular all week, with the children mixing colours, scents and sparkles to make growing potions as well as their own creations.  The children were excited to make their own mini cress heads with the seeds sprouting overnight!  The observations and language used by the children has been fantastic and I hope they are all able to try some cress in a few days time.  We also had some wonderful discussions about how we have grown since being born and thought about what we can do now compared to when we were a baby.  The class then worked in pairs to do some observational drawings of each other.

Friday was all about Red Nose Day.  We made sure we had fun whilst remembering why we fundraise and who needs it most.  The children loved wearing their noses – thank you to all who have donated.

Have a lovely weekend and we look forward to seeing you on Monday.

What a busy time we have had in Reception this week!

We have continued our learning of the Easter story by hearing about Jesus' arrival in Jerusalem on a donkey.  The children showed great empathy when we talked about Judas and how his betrayal would affect Jesus.  We also took the opportunity to think about love, and what it means to us.

Tuesday was International Women's Day.  We were able to think about how women have challenged gender equality and we put ourselves in the shoes of women like Rosa Parks and Mary Anning to imagine how they may have felt.

This week the children have been learning about speech bubbles and how we can use them in our writing and storytelling.  We have seen some great examples of what the children would say to the bear in our book, 'Silly Doggy' and I have been so impressed with the children's use of their phonic knowledge in their writing.

The focus of our maths learning has been the numbers 9 and 10 with the children exploring different ways of making these numbers and using part-whole models.  They have loved coming to the front and being mini teachers to the class, telling us what they can see and explaining their reasoning!

This week the children used their forest school time to help in our outdoor area.  They worked so well together, moving stones and soil to create a small world area and fill up planters ready for us to grow some exciting plants over the coming months.

The children have really enjoyed their time this week with our music and dance teachers from Formby High.  A real highlight was to seem them all dancing 'under the sea'!  Our Music in Unison session was fantastic as well.  The children were captivated by Tara's flute and showed great rhythm on the drums!

Have a lovely weekend and we look forward to seeing you on Monday.

We have had a fantastic week in Reception!

We began our week exploring pancakes and pancake day, enjoying a pancake treat on Tuesday with our friends!  It was lovely to hear the children chatting about their favourite toppings and what they were hoping to enjoy on their pancakes at home!

On Ash Wednesday we discussed Lent, and how Jesus suffered in the desert.  The children took their time to consider what they could ‘give up’ for Lent and we had many suggestions, ranging from Barbie Dolls to chocolate!

During our Maths learning this week we have recapped our understanding of the days of the week and comparing heights and lengths.  I have been so impressed with the children’s knowledge and application of this knowledge and how their reasoning skills are improving each week.

We were so lucky this week to have some amazing experiences with our music teacher from Formby High, a trip to Forest School, a music session with Music In Unison and our first dance session, also from Formby High.  The children were so enthusiastic and picked up the dance routine really quickly – we cannot wait to show you during our Mother’s Day Celebration at the end of the month!

Thursday was World Book Day and a huge thank you to all parents and carers for the fantastic costumes for the children.   They were so excited to share their favourite books with each other as well as their Year 6 buddies and we had a wonderful day, reading, listening to and creating stories.

Have a lovely weekend and we look forward to seeing you on Monday.

It was so lovely to welcome the children back to school this week and hear all their news!

We introduced the children to our new topic of Animals from around the world with an exciting rainforest explorer role play area, which has been incredibly popular all week.  The children have been on adventures deep into the rainforest, spotting animals and creating some wonderful stories.

Our WOW service on Wednesday was focused on the meaning of Lent, explaining all the significant days that are coming up between now and Easter.  A big thank you to Anne and Caroline.

The children have impressed so much this week with their maths learning, showing enthusiasm and great reasoning skills when combining groups of numbers, using number lines and comparing heights.

We have also begun a new literacy topic, although the focus book is yet to be revealed to the children!  We were shocked to discover a mysterious creature had caused chaos in our school bin store, making such a mess.  This captured the children's imaginations and there were many discussions about who the culprit could be, with some fantastic suggestions and explanations.

The sun was shining for us at Forest School on Tuesday.  The children took bark rubbings, enjoying the trees and being out in nature.  Thank you Mrs Bevin!

We were also very lucky to have a music session with Music In Unison.  The children absolutely loved playing the different instruments, dancing and joining in with musical games.  We are so grateful to Tara for giving the children such a wonderful musical experience and we cannot wait until next week!

Have a lovely weekend and we look forward to seeing you on Monday.

We cannot believe how time has flown this half term!

This week has been all about love as we explored Valentine’s Day. The children have shown incredible independent writing as well as wonderful creativity making Valentine cards for the special people in their lives.  We have seen cards exchanged between friends as well as them being taken home for family members with the children showing great pride in their work!

We have been learning about some common garden and coastal birds as we took part in the Big Schools’ Birdwatch for the RSPB.  The children have spotted birds coming and going from our outdoor area as well as looking and listening for them during their time at Forest School.  To mark Internet Safety Day on Tuesday, we took the opportunity to research the different gulls we may see using the internet.  We talked about staying safe online, remembering to always ask an adult before using the internet. If you would like any further information about this, please see our Online Safety section of the school website or click here.

In our maths learning this week we have been considering one more and different representations of the numbers 6, 7 and 8.  We have used dominoes to help us create number sentences and enjoyed a game of Kim’s game to remember the missing object and work out how many objects remain.  The children were great at recalling the missing object and excelled at the challenge!

During the children’s time outdoors, they began to create their very own ‘Drive through Ice Cream parlour’.  This has evolved over the week and by Friday was fully stocked with menus, ice cream containers, money and sprinkles!  It has been wonderful to see the children working together and having such fun with their ideas.

Love Reading have launched their 'top book picks' for this month. More, highly-rated children's reads, from a variety of authors for different age ranges, are shared with us all to enjoy.

I have also updated the Reception virtual classroom, which is attached below.

We hope you all have a lovely half term break and look forward to seeing you soon.
