This week in Collective Worship, we explored how we can take care of the world around us. We began by sharing all the things we love about our environment, from animals and trees to oceans and fresh air. The children thought carefully about the small actions we can take each day to protect our beautiful planet.

In RE, we reflected on modern-day people who changed their lives because of Jesus. We focused on Mother Teresa, learning about her kindness, dedication, and desire to help others. The children shared thoughtful ideas about how her actions inspire people today.

For Internet Safety Day, Year 3 learned all about AI. We discussed how AI can be useful, like helping us write stories or answer questions, but also how it can sometimes give incorrect information, so we need to think carefully and check facts.
The children had a brilliant time experimenting with what AI can do, creating stories and trying out fun quizzes!

In English, the class stepped into the roles of both authors and illustrators while creating their very own author books. They worked so hard writing up their Stone Age stories and illustrating them with creativity and care. The final pieces look fantastic!

In Maths, we continued learning about division, looking closely at dividing with remainders. The children also explored scaling, using multiplication and division to solve problems. They have impressed us with their perseverance and growing confidence.

During outdoor learning, Year 3 were set a challenge: find objects in the environment that matched different criteria. Children looked for things that could be a good habitat, objects that felt rough or smooth, and materials that could decompose. Their curiosity and careful observation skills shone through!

In Art, Year 3 designed and created their own cardboard sculptures. They used different joining techniques to build their creations and worked carefully to bring their designs to life. The sculptures were wonderfully imaginative and showed fantastic problem-solving skills.

Reminders:

After half term, PE days will be Tuesday and Wednesday. Please ensure the children come in their PE kit and trainers on these days.

In RE this week, Year 3 listened to the story of Sajjan, who owned an inn. At first, Sajjan did not live a kind life. He pretended to be helpful, but he was actually dishonest and unkind to others. When Sajjan met Guru Nanak, he began to think carefully about his actions and how they affected people. We talked about how Sajjan’s life changed after this meeting. He realised that it is important to be honest, caring and fair, and he chose to change his ways. The children discussed how people can learn from their mistakes and how everyone has the chance to become a better person.

In Collective Worship, Year 3 talked about diversity. We learned that everyone is different and that these differences make our world a special place. We discussed how people may look different, have different beliefs, cultures or abilities, but everyone deserves to be treated with kindness, respect and fairness.

In English, we have been writing our own Stone Age adventure stories. We began by learning about life in the Stone Age and exploring what an adventure story needs. The children planned their stories carefully, thinking about their characters, settings and problems. They worked hard to include descriptive language, powerful verbs and exciting story openings.

In Maths, we have been focusing on division, including division with exchanging and remainders. The children used practical resources, drawings and written methods to help them understand the process. They showed great perseverance when tackling trickier questions and enjoyed solving word problems linked to real‑life situations.

We thoroughly enjoyed a fabulous Stone Age workshop, which really brought our history learning to life. The children had the opportunity to dress up as Stone Age people and explore a range of artefacts. They asked thoughtful questions and were fascinated to learn how people lived, hunted and survived thousands of years ago.

In Science, we learned about sun protection and the damage the sun can cause. We discussed how the sun’s rays can affect our skin and eyes and learned simple ways to stay safe, such as wearing hats, sunglasses and sun cream. The children shared their own experiences and showed a good understanding of how to protect themselves.

During PE, we focused on teamwork, communication and map skills. The children worked in groups on a mapping activity where one person had to explain where to place certain items using a key and clear directions. This helped develop listening skills and cooperation. We also enjoyed our LFC PE sessions, where the children worked on their fitness, coordination and confidence while taking part in fun, active games.

In Outdoor Learning, the children used their imagination to design their own insects. They carefully thought about what their insects would need to survive and then created habitats using natural materials. This activity encouraged creativity, teamwork and respect for the natural environment.

Reminders

- PE days continue to be Wednesday and Thursday until half term.

In English, we have been exploring speech and character emotions through our class story The Stone Age Boy. The children thought carefully about how characters might be feeling at different points in the story and practised using speech to show this. They also worked hard to sequence the important events, showing a great understanding of the story.

In Maths, we have been focusing on division, learning how to divide a two-digit number by a one-digit number. The children used practical resources and careful reasoning to help them explain their answers.

In RE, the children explored the stories of Jesus’ disciples, thinking carefully about what their lives were like before they met Jesus and how their lives changed afterwards. Each child focused on a chosen disciple and learned about their background, such as their jobs, families, and everyday lives. We looked closely at stories including Peter, discussing how he was an ordinary fisherman before meeting Jesus and how Jesus’ call led him to become a leader who shared God’s message with others. The children reflected on the challenges the disciples faced, the choices they had to make, and how following Jesus required trust, courage, and faith.

In Science, the children investigated light and shadows through a hands-on experiment. They explored how the size of a shadow can change when the distance between the light source, object, and surface is altered. Before starting, the children made predictions and shared their ideas about what they thought might happen.

During outdoor learning, the children took part in a fun camouflage challenge. They had to hide a pipe cleaner ‘worm’ so that it blended into the environment, while the other team tried to spot it. This encouraged teamwork, problem-solving and careful observation.

In History, we examined artefacts from the Iron Age and discussed what these objects might tell us about life at that time. The children made thoughtful predictions and shared their ideas confidently.

In Art, we explored positive and negative space and used this knowledge to sketch a sculpture. They carefully observed the outline rather than the finer detail. The children showed great focus, observation and creativity in their work.

Reminders:

  • The Parent–Teacher meeting booking system is now live and will close on Tuesday 3rd February at 6pm.
  • PE days continue to be Wednesday and Thursday until half term.

In English, we have been developing our understanding of speech sandwiches. The children practised writing speech–action–action–speech, making sure to include a range of interesting verbs and adverbs to bring their writing to life. We have also been exploring prefixes, learning how they change the meaning of words, and had great fun reinforcing this by playing charades.

In Maths, we have been building our confidence in multiplying by two‑digit numbers, working both with and without remainders. The children showed great resilience and problem‑solving skills as they tackled calculations.

During RE, we read the story of ‘The Young Rich Man’ and explored its meaning together. The children talked thoughtfully about what Jesus wanted the young man to change, focusing on how he was asked to give up his possessions and follow Jesus. We discussed whether the young man was able to do this and shared ideas about why it may have been difficult for him, such as being attached to his wealth or feeling worried about giving everything away. As part of the 'Week of Prayer for Christian Unity', Year 3 worked together to create a handprint heart, celebrating unity, togetherness and respect for one another.

We combined History and Art this week by creating our own Iron Age hill forts. The children used junk modelling techniques, carefully joining materials together and then labelling the different parts of their hill forts. This was a fantastic hands on way to explore Iron Age life and design.

In Science, we investigated materials that cast a shadow, observing how different objects block light and discussing why this happens.

Our PE lessons were full of energy as we played crab football, focusing on our teamwork and cooperation skills. The class also thoroughly enjoyed a special PE session led by LFC, which was a real highlight of the week.

We also enjoyed our first drumming session, where the children showed excellent listening skills and enthusiasm as they explored rhythm and beat together.

Finally, in Outdoor Learning, we went on a magic gold leaf hunt, exploring our environment and having fun with our friends.

This week we stepped back in time and imagined ourselves living in the Stone Age, inspired by the story ‘Stone Age Boy’. We wrote diary entries describing what it might have been like to camp, hunt, and explore during that time. The children used brilliant descriptive language and really brought their Stone Age adventures to life.

In Maths, we explored what happens when we multiply numbers by 10. We used our place value knowledge to help us understand how digits shift to make numbers ten times bigger. We also compared different multiplication questions and explained our reasoning clearly.

In RE, we read the story of ‘Levi’ and reflected on what mattered to him before and after meeting Jesus. The children had thoughtful discussions about change, kindness, and making good choices.

Our value this week in collective worship was Serve. We linked this to the story of Jesus washing the disciples’ feet and talked about how we can show service in our own lives through small, everyday actions.

After spending time in the Stone Age, we moved forward in history to explore the Bronze Age. We learned about new tools, materials, and how life began to change for early people.

In Outdoor learning, we created beautiful nature bracelets using leaves, petals, and other natural treasures we found outside. We had so much fun!

Our Science investigation focused on light and reflection. We tested different materials to see which ones reflected light and which ones didn’t. The children made great predictions and observations.

We ended the week with our very first drumming session! The children absolutely loved it and showed fantastic rhythm and enthusiasm. We can’t wait for the next one.

In RE, we reflected on the meaning of Emmanuel, which means 'God with us'. We talked about why Christmas is such an important time for Christians and how it reminds us of hope, joy, and togetherness.

This week in English we have been busy planning our very own fantasy stories. First, we created detailed character descriptions for our main heroes and villains. Then we practiced writing setting descriptions, imagining magical forests, mysterious caves, and enchanted castles. We’ve been working hard to use similes, adjectives, and prepositions to make our writing more exciting. Finally, we planned out our storylines, ready to bring our adventures to life!

In Maths, we have been practicing multiplying and dividing by 3. We used number patterns, games, and challenges to help us remember our facts. Everyone is becoming much more confident with their 3 times tables!

Our History lessons took us back in time to Skara Brae, a Stone Age village in Scotland. We explored how the artefacts found there, like tools, furniture, and jewellery, help us understand what life was like thousands of years ago. It was amazing to think about how people lived without the things we use every day.

In Design and Technology, we got creative in the kitchen! We made our own seasonal vegetable tarts. After baking, we tasted them and wrote evaluations about the flavours and textures. Some were delicious, and some had very “interesting” combinations, but we all had fun being chefs!

We also enjoyed our outdoor learning sessions. Using natural materials, we built houses and gardens for fantasy characters such as fairies. It was wonderful to see our imaginations come to life outside, combining creativity with teamwork.

We loved watching the Rock Steady concerts, where our friends performed in their own bands. It was inspiring to see them play instruments and sing with so much confidence. We clapped, cheered, and danced along!

One of the highlights of the week was the Santa Dash. In groups, we raced around the school following clues to find hidden elves. It was full of laughter, teamwork, and festive excitement!

In RE we read the story of ‘Papa Panov’. We talked about how he showed kindness to people in need, even though he didn’t have much himself. We learned that God was with him and that kindness is a way of showing love and care for others. We thought about how we can be kind in our own lives, like helping a friend, sharing, or saying something nice to someone who is feeling sad.

In Maths we have been recapping our previous learning to make sure we are confident with our number facts. Then we started learning about arrays in multiplication. We used counters and drawings to make rows and columns, which helped us see how multiplication is repeated addition. We enjoyed spotting patterns and even challenged ourselves to make our own arrays to show different times tables.

In English we have been planning our own letters based on the story ‘Winter’s Child’. We imagined we were the boy writing to a family member to tell them all about the new friend he has made. We thought carefully about how to describe the Winter’s Child and what it feels like to play together in the snow. We also planned how to set out our letters properly, with greetings, paragraphs, and a closing line.

In History we learned about the Palaeolithic period, which is part of the Stone Age. We discovered that people at that time were hunter-gatherers. They didn’t have permanent homes, so they travelled around to find food and hunt animals. We talked about how different their lives were compared to ours today, and we imagined what it might be like to live without houses, shops, or electricity.

In Science we tested different materials to see if they were magnetic. We used magnets to check objects made of metal, plastic, wood, and other materials. Some things surprised us, not all metals were magnetic! We enjoyed predicting what would happen before testing, and then recording our results to see if our predictions were correct.

As part of Road Safety Week, we talked about the importance of staying safe when crossing the road. We learned to always stop, look, and listen before crossing, and to use crossings whenever possible. We even practiced this on the playground, pretending it was a busy road, so we could show how to cross carefully. We know that being safe near roads is very important.

We also watched our whole school Kindness video. It was so much fun to see everyone together and we especially enjoyed watching ourselves dancing! The video reminded us that kindness can be shown in many different ways, and it made us smile to see our whole school joining in.

Reminders:

  • PE lessons will continue to be Monday and Wednesday.

What a busy week we’ve had in Year 3!

In RE, we had a peaceful time doing a guided meditation, imagining we were in the hills of Bethlehem. We learned that ‘Emmanuel’ means “God with us” and explored several artworks showing the shepherds visiting baby Jesus. We talked about what we noticed in each painting; the light, the colours, and how the artists showed that the shepherds were in the presence of God.

In English, we continued reading our class story ‘Winter’s Child’. We explored verbs in the past and present tense, and used them to describe how Tom moved as he skated and skied through the snow. We also looked at adverbs of time and how they help us say when something happens. Using everything we’ve learned, we planned and wrote our own diary entries from Tom’s point of view.

In Maths, we have been working hard on addition and subtraction, using practical methods to help us solve problems. We’ve used counters, number lines, and place value charts to show our thinking and to explain our answers clearly.

Our History learning this week was very special as we focused on Remembrance Day. We learned about why we remember and took part in a two minutes’ silence to show our respect. We also made beautiful wreaths to display at the church.

In Science, we became investigators! We tested how far our toy cars could travel on different surfaces to find out which surface made them go the furthest. We made predictions, carried out fair tests, and carefully recorded our results. It was lots of fun seeing which surface worked best!

This week has also been Kindness Week, and Year 3 have truly shown their caring hearts. We’ve been filming our dance moves for the school’s kindness video, collecting food for the local food bank, and thinking about how small acts of kindness can make a big difference.

We were lucky to have a visit from Sue from Stepnell Construction, who came to tell us all about the world of construction. The children were then able to create their own buildings with lego. We loved it!

Finally, on Friday, we celebrated Children in Need. We talked about why it’s important to help others and how we can support those who need it most.

Reminders:

PE days will continue to be on a Monday and Wednesday.

What a brilliant week we've had in Year 3! Here's a peek at all the exciting things we've been learning and doing across our subjects:

This week in English, we’ve been planning and writing our very own diary entries. We’ve been learning how to use paragraphs to organise our thoughts and ideas. We talked about why we change paragraphs; like when we start a new topic, a new time, or a new place in our writing. It’s helped our diaries feel more personal and easier to read!

In Maths, we’ve continued exploring place value and how numbers work. We’ve been predicting where numbers go on a number line and comparing them using greater than (>), less than (<), or equal to (=). We’ve also been practising our times tables, getting quicker and more confident every day!

Our Science lessons took us inside the body this week as we looked at different types of skeletons. We discovered that some animals have endoskeletons, some have exoskeletons, and some have no skeleton at all!

In Geography, we’ve been comparing two European cities: Paris and London. We looked at their landmarks, languages, transport, and even food! It was fun spotting similarities and differences.

PE was all about creativity and control. We made up our own movement routines and practiced symmetry using equipment like mats and benches. It was a great way to work on balance and teamwork while having loads of fun.

In Art, we let our imaginations run wild! We drew pictures of what we thought might grow out of a seed; and wow, did we come up with some amazing ideas! From multicoloured leaves to candy flowers, our creativity really bloomed.

The children have really enjoyed working together to make a scarecrow for St. Peters Church. Paddington looks amazing!

What a brilliant week we have had in Year 3. The children have really shown the value of 'Hope', where they have really tried there best and not given up!

In English, we've been getting creative with words! We’ve been exploring different vocabulary and how to use it in the right context. We learned how to look up new words in dictionaries and used them to improve our writing. One of the highlights of the week was writing riddles about sea creatures! We worked on using verbs and prepositions in our riddles, making them more exciting and detailed. Finally, we’ve been learning how to correctly use inverted commas for speech in our writing.

In Maths, we’ve continued to explore place value. We’ve been using place value charts and manipulatives, like counters and 100’s, 10’s and 1’s to help us understand how numbers change when we add or subtract 1, 10, or 100. This week, we practiced finding numbers that are 1, 10, and 100 more or less than a given number.

In RE, we’ve been reading the story of Moses. We discussed his role as a prophet, how he was feeling during key moments in the story, and what he did to help the people of Israel. We thought about how Moses trusted in God’s plan and how he helped lead the people through difficult times.

In PE, we’ve been practicing different types of jumps in gymnastics. We learned about how to control our bodies and land safely after a jump.

In Geography, we’ve been researching different European countries. We discovered some fascinating facts about the countries' cultures, landmarks, and traditions. It’s been so fun discovering what makes each country unique, and we’re excited to explore even more about the world in the coming weeks!

In Science, we’ve been exploring the bones in the human body. We learned about their structure and functions, such as how bones protect our organs and help us move. We also looked at the different types of bones in our body, like the long bones in our arms and legs, and the small bones in our fingers and ears. We even got to try some fun activities to learn the names of the bones!

Reminders:

  • Monday 22nd September – Individual school photos

  • The weekly spelling lists are available on Google Classroom every Friday

  • As Year 3 will be starting an additional dance session on Wednesday's from 8th October, Children to come in in their PE kit, Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

We have had a fantastic start to the term in Year 3!

In Maths, we’ve been learning all about place value. We’ve been looking closely at numbers up to 100 and even up to 1000! We’ve used different representations like base ten blocks, number lines, and place value charts to help us understand how numbers are made and how we can partition them into hundreds, tens and ones.

In English, we’ve started reading our focus book Seal Surfer. Before we began reading, we used clues from the cover and blurb to predict what the story might be about. We even wrote our own story openings! We’ve also been learning about prepositions and how they help us describe where something is in our writing – like “above,” “under,” and “next to”.

In Geography, we’ve been exploring Europe! We used atlases to help us find different countries and learn where they are on the map. We enjoyed discovering new places and seeing how countries are connected.

In RE, we’ve been talking about 'prophets'. We ahve discussed who they are, what they do, and why they are so important. We learned that prophets are special people who spread God’s word and help guide others to live good and kind lives. We discusse the values prophets may hold such as honesty, courage, kindness, patience, and faith. We discussed how prophets help people stay connected to their faith and how their messages still inspire people today.

In Science, we’ve started learning about nutrition and the different food groups. We talked about why each group is important for our bodies, and how to keep a balanced diet to stay healthy.

In Art, we’ve been practising our shading skills using pencils. We experimented with light and dark tones to make our drawings more realistic. It’s been fun trying out different pencil techniques!

In PE, we’ve started our gymnastics topic. We’ve been practising different shapes like tucks, straddles, and pikes and learning how to hold them with control and balance.

What an exciting start we’ve had , we can’t wait to see what the rest of the term brings!
