As we reach the end of an incredible school year, Year 5 have continued to impress us throughout this final half term with their energy, enthusiasm and achievements. Although this particular half term didn’t pan out quite as expected for a certain teacher with a broken ankle, the children have taken everything in their stride (pun intended). It has been a privilege to have taught the class throughout Year 5 and I’m even more excited to be their Year 6 teacher in September!
A sincere thank you also for the thoughtful messages, cards and generous gifts received by the Year 5 team. Your kindness and support mean so much and, although never expected, are truly appreciated.
I would also like to say a heartfelt thank you for the incredibly thoughtful hamper I received following the ankle break. It was such a kind gesture, and although I haven’t been able to thank you all in person, please know how much it meant to me.
As always, this half term has been packed with unforgettable moments and here are just a few highlights:
- Writing: Inspired by our class text, The Hunter, the children have written brilliant short stories full of atmosphere, vivid characters and gripping plots;
- Reading: Year 5 explored The Hunter by Paul Geraghty - a powerful picture book that sparked thoughtful discussion around conservation, empathy, and change. Year 5 also continued to develop their love of reading, exploring a range of genres, from graphic novels to non-fiction, through Get Epic;
- Maths: The children have been developing their understanding of measure, with a particular focus on converting between different units. From grams to kilograms and millilitres to litres, the children have worked hard to apply their knowledge to real-life contexts;
- Science: Our focus has been on forces, with a particular emphasis on developing our understanding through hands-on investigation. The children took part in an exciting carousel of practical activities, using Newton metres to measure force in newtons and explore how different surfaces, materials and weights affect movement and resistance;
- RE: The children reflected on the themes of faith, courage and trust in God, considering how Daniel stayed true to his beliefs despite facing great challenges. Through discussion and creative activities, we thought about how people today can show similar bravery and integrity when standing up for what they believe is right;
- Collective Worship: We have continued using Picture News as the focus of our Collective Worship sessions. Through these discussions, we have explored both the Christian values and the spiritual connections linked to each topic, encouraging thoughtful reflection and meaningful conversations;
- PE: In sunny conditions, Year 5 brought their best effort and incredible sportsmanship to every Sports Day race and event;
- Music: After weeks of vocal coaching with Stephen Mannings, the children had the incredible opportunity to perform at Liverpool Cathedral for the ‘Big Sing’ concert. Their confidence and passion filled the space - a magical experience;
- Spanish: The children have practised greetings, basic vocabulary and simple sentences to build confidence in speaking and listening;
- Art: The children channelled their creativity into some vibrant, summer-themed artwork. Each piece was proudly displayed in our school hall as part of our Summer Art Gallery, where families were invited to view - and even purchase - their child's work. It was a wonderful celebration of artistic talent and a lovely way to round off the year!
- ‘Go Outside’ Adventure Day: Year 5 embraced the wild during our trip to ‘Go Outside’. From woodland challenges to team-building games, the children showed resilience, collaboration and plenty of muddy smiles.
To support the children's transition into Year 6, please find attached a ‘Successful Start’ PowerPoint which outlines key information for Year 6 in September.

We are now in our final half-term of primary school!
It seems like only yesterday that our Year 6 pupils were in Reception, saying goodbye to their Year 6 buddies...now we're only weeks away from it being their turn!
The hard work and determination hasn’t stopped since SATs have finished though. We have already managed to:
- Add three new writing pieces to our author books, including a poem and a non-chronological report.
- Start our new Science unit on ‘Light’, which has included a practical investigation on reflection.
Our leavers’ preparations have officially begun as well:
- In PE, we have started our dance sessions and already the class have proven they can deliver a performance!
- In Music, we have mainly focused on singing as we have several performances to deliver, including at the Leavers’ Service at Liverpool Cathedral next week.
- We have started a new class book, 'The Final Year' by Matt Goodfellow.
- There have been other opportunities for reflection on the 8-year journeys we have been on through art pieces and discussions around the much anticipated, ‘leavers’ production’!
Upcoming Events and Reminders:
Please make sure you check the summer diary dates for upcoming important events - there are several events linked specifically to Year 6! Also, ensure you have read the letters sent on School Spider regarding next week’s trips to Alton Towers and Liverpool Cathedral.
PE will continue on Wednesdays and Thursdays this half-term.
We hope you are all looking forward to the upcoming celebrations. Year 6 are going to be very busy for the next two months!

It has certainly been a half-term of hard work!
After plenty of preparation and build-up, the time to sit our KS2 SATs finally arrived! We could not be any prouder of all the children; they showed such positivity, resilience and optimism throughout the week. As in previous years, it was once again wonderful to hear that the children found that SATs process wasn't actually as bad as they thought it could be and that lots of the children would like to visit the Year 5 children before the end of term to let them know this too. Well done, everyone - you are all superstars!
Despite the 'dull' nature of sitting assessments this half-term, we did also manage to find opportunities to have laughs along the way too, including:
• Our final swimming lessons in primary school, including the last ‘fun lesson’!
• Opportunities to represent the school in sports such as football and tag rugby.
• The ‘SPaG rave’ in class on the Friday afternoon before SATs Week.
• Our post-SATs ‘Beach Day’ celebration.
…and we are now very excited for all the leavers’ celebrations to follow next half-term!
Be sure to check the diary dates and letters regarding upcoming trips, including Alton Towers.
We hope the children all have a well-earned break next week...they certainly deserve it!
See you in a week!

How have we reached this point already? The end of the penultimate half term of Year 5! We have achieved so much throughout this half term with plenty of memorable moments…
Here are just some of our highlights:
- Writing: The children wrote persuasive complaint letters about pollution in the local area, using the ‘poison pool’ from The Paperbag Prince as their inspiration. They used formal language, clear structure and strong vocabulary to express their concerns and suggest solutions – so many brilliant examples of purposeful writing!
- Reading: Our reading journey continued as we explored powerful themes in The Paperbag Prince, learned all about Japanese culture, including Manga, and we were also introduced to Get Epic! - a brilliant eLibrary where the children began discovering books of their own choosing.
- Maths: Our focus this half term shifted to translation, coordinates, line graphs, shapes and multiplying fractions. The children have tackled each topic with enthusiasm and growing confidence. TT Rockstars has also continued to be a big highlight - we've seen a fantastic rise in 'Rock Heroes', and everyone has made brilliant progress in boosting their rock status!
- RE: We have been learning about inspiring women in the Old Testament. The children explored the stories of figures such as Ruth, Esther and Deborah, reflecting on their courage, faith, and leadership. Thoughtful discussions helped us consider how these examples still hold meaning today.
- Collective Worship: We have continued using Picture News as the focus of our Collective Worship sessions. Through these discussions, we have explored both the Christian values and the spiritual connections linked to each topic, encouraging thoughtful reflection and meaningful conversations;
- PE: Highlights have included our Wazball sessions with many different varieties of the game serving to test the children’s tactical awareness and skillsets. Alongside this, Year 5 have developed their athletic skills through running and throwing focused lessons, showing great energy and enthusiasm throughout.
- Music: Stephen Mannings from Liverpool Cathedral Choir has continued to lead our vocal coaching sessions which is building to the ‘Big Sing’ concert at Liverpool Cathedral in July.
- Geography: The children have developed a wealth of knowledge about Japan and its culture and origins. They have learned all about Japan’s location on the map as well as its amazing natural features, such as Mouth Fuji. We also found out about the people who live there, their cities and what daily life is like in Japan. A particular highlight was our Japanese food tasting session on the final day of this half term!
- Art: The children focused on architecture by practising observational drawing, printmaking, and designing buildings. They also explored architectural features and studied Hundertwasser’s unique style.
See you all in a week’s time for the FINAL half term of Year 5. We’ll be sure to make it the best yet!
Reminders for next half term:
- There is no set homework or spellings for the half term break. However, the Year 5 Virtual Classroom has been updated and attached to this blog. It includes links to websites and resources. Pupils can find their individual passwords on Google Classroom. Don’t forget the Practice section on Mirodo, where children can choose topics to practise in Maths, Reading, SPaG, or Science.
- PE days for the next half term will continue to be Thursday and Friday.
- Year 5 have commenced Brass instrument lessons which will continue for the remainder of the summer term and into Year 6. Please ensure that permission has been returned via y5@tsp.sefton.school .
- School re-opens on Monday 2nd June.

This term, our topic has been Growth and Change, and the children have loved exploring the life cycles of plants and animals. We planted our own seeds and have been watching them grow carefully each day, learning about what plants need to thrive. A highlight has been caring for our very own class caterpillars – we’ve been fascinated by how quickly they’re changing and can’t wait to see them turn into butterflies!
In RE, our focus has been on friendship and special places. We’ve had lots of lovely discussions about what it means to be a good friend, how we can show kindness to others, and the places that are special to us and why. The children have shared some lovely thoughts and experiences during circle time.
We were also lucky enough to have a visit from Active Sefton, who spoke to us about healthy eating. The children learned about making balanced food choices and had the chance to make and taste their very own fruit smoothies – delicious and nutritious!
In maths, we’ve been exploring numbers beyond 10 and developing our understanding through fun, hands-on activities. The children have also enjoyed working with 2D and 3D shapes, manipulating and rotating them to create patterns, pictures and structures – a great link to our construction play!
One of the most magical parts of our term has been the daily surprises from our visiting fairies. Each morning, the children couldn’t wait to discover what the fairies had been up to in our classroom overnight – from rearranging our dclassroom to leaving tiny notes or glitter trails. It’s been a fantastic way to spark curiosity and imagination.
We’re looking forward to the final term ahead and all the new adventures it will bring!

Well done on a lovely half term year 1.
In maths this half term we have focussed on fractions and position and direction. We have been working on finding a half and a quarter of shapes and objects. We started by using various sized and coloured shapes to explore making half, we had a brilliant understanding of how 2 halves make a whole. We then developed our learning by recognising and finding a quarter of various shapes and objects. We started by folding and cutting shapes into 4 equal parts, then put our learning into practice by independently working on questions. In position and direction we have enjoyed using the correct vocabulary to describe turns and played games to show our understanding of a full turn, half turn, quarter turn and three quarter turn.
In RE we have been learning about baptism. We had the chance to share and discuss all of our Baptism photographs which was a lovely exercise and allowed us to reflect back on the special day. We used the photographs to consider who was around us, what we wore, and the very special features of a Christening Day.
In Design and Technology we have been learning about the differences between fruit and vegetables. We completed a workshop on smoothie making where the children learnt about healthy eating and different food groups. They then got to taste test a smoothie and gave their verdict. The children had a great evaluation lesson where they designed their own packaging for a new smoothie. The children decided on the name 'Super Smoothie,' it was great to see their creativity shine through.
One of our highlights this half term was the computing day. We completed 6 activities working on using different apps to create shapes and collect data. The class had a brilliant day and were able to demonstrate their creativity, I know that they can't wait for their next computing day!
Please find attached the virtual classroom for activities to support your child.
