Year 5 - Summer 1 - Week 5

Date: 22nd May 2025 @ 1:17pm

ZXCVBNM.jpg

How have we reached this point already? The end of the penultimate half term of Year 5! We have achieved so much throughout this half term with plenty of memorable moments…

Here are just some of our highlights:

  • Writing: The children wrote persuasive complaint letters about pollution in the local area, using the ‘poison pool’ from The Paperbag Prince as their inspiration. They used formal language, clear structure and strong vocabulary to express their concerns and suggest solutions – so many brilliant examples of purposeful writing!
  • Reading: Our reading journey continued as we explored powerful themes in The Paperbag Prince, learned all about Japanese culture, including Manga, and we were also introduced to Get Epic! - a brilliant eLibrary where the children began discovering books of their own choosing.
  • Maths: Our focus this half term shifted to translation, coordinates, line graphs, shapes and multiplying fractions. The children have tackled each topic with enthusiasm and growing confidence. TT Rockstars has also continued to be a big highlight - we've seen a fantastic rise in 'Rock Heroes', and everyone has made brilliant progress in boosting their rock status!
  • RE: We have been learning about inspiring women in the Old Testament. The children explored the stories of figures such as Ruth, Esther and Deborah, reflecting on their courage, faith, and leadership. Thoughtful discussions helped us consider how these examples still hold meaning today.
  • Collective Worship: We have continued using Picture News as the focus of our Collective Worship sessions. Through these discussions, we have explored both the Christian values and the spiritual connections linked to each topic, encouraging thoughtful reflection and meaningful conversations;
  • PE: Highlights have included our Wazball sessions with many different varieties of the game serving to test the children’s tactical awareness and skillsets. Alongside this, Year 5 have developed their athletic skills through running and throwing focused lessons, showing great energy and enthusiasm throughout.
  • Music: Stephen Mannings from Liverpool Cathedral Choir has continued to lead our vocal coaching sessions which is building to the ‘Big Sing’ concert at Liverpool Cathedral in July.
  • Geography: The children have developed a wealth of knowledge about Japan and its culture and origins. They have learned all about Japan’s location on the map as well as its amazing natural features, such as Mouth Fuji. We also found out about the people who live there, their cities and what daily life is like in Japan. A particular highlight was our Japanese food tasting session on the final day of this half term!
  • Art: The children focused on architecture by practising observational drawing, printmaking, and designing buildings. They also explored architectural features and studied Hundertwasser’s unique style.

See you all in a week’s time for the FINAL half term of Year 5. We’ll be sure to make it the best yet!

Reception - Summer 1 - Week 5

Date: 21st May 2025 @ 1:18pm

IMG_2632.png

This term, our topic has been Growth and Change, and the children have loved exploring the life cycles of plants and animals. We planted our own seeds and have been watching them grow carefully each day, learning about what plants need to thrive. A highlight has been caring for our very own class caterpillars – we’ve been fascinated by how quickly they’re changing and can’t wait to see them turn into butterflies!

In RE, our focus has been on friendship and special places. We’ve had lots of lovely discussions about what it means to be a good friend, how we can show kindness to others, and the places that are special to us and why. The children have shared some lovely thoughts and experiences during circle time.

We were also lucky enough to have a visit from Active Sefton, who spoke to us about healthy eating. The children learned about making balanced food choices and had the chance to make and taste their very own fruit smoothies – delicious and nutritious!

In maths, we’ve been exploring numbers beyond 10 and developing our understanding through fun, hands-on activities. The children have also enjoyed working with 2D and 3D shapes, manipulating and rotating them to create patterns, pictures and structures – a great link to our construction play!

One of the most magical parts of our term has been the daily surprises from our visiting fairies. Each morning, the children couldn’t wait to discover what the fairies had been up to in our classroom overnight – from rearranging our dclassroom to leaving tiny notes or glitter trails. It’s been a fantastic way to spark curiosity and imagination.

 We’re looking forward to the final term ahead and all the new adventures it will bring!

Year 1 - Summer 1 - Week 5

Date: 20th May 2025 @ 9:49pm

Well done on a lovely half term year 1.

In maths this half term we have focussed on fractions and position and direction. We have been working on finding a half and a quarter of shapes and objects. We started by using various sized and coloured shapes to explore making half, we had a brilliant understanding of how 2 halves make a whole. We then developed our learning by recognising and finding a quarter of various shapes and objects. We started by folding and cutting shapes into 4 equal parts, then put our learning into practice by independently working on questions. In position and direction we have enjoyed using the correct vocabulary to describe turns and played games to show our understanding of a full turn, half turn, quarter turn and three quarter turn.

In RE we have been learning about baptism. We had the chance to share and discuss all of our Baptism photographs which was a lovely exercise and allowed us to reflect back on the special day. We used the photographs to consider who was around us, what we wore, and the very special features of a Christening Day.

In Design and Technology we have been learning about the differences between fruit and vegetables. We completed a workshop on smoothie making where the children learnt about healthy eating and different food groups. They then got to taste test a smoothie and gave their verdict. The children had a great evaluation lesson where they designed their own packaging for a new smoothie. The children decided on the name 'Super Smoothie,' it was great to see their creativity shine through.

One of our highlights this half term was the computing day. We completed 6 activities working on using different apps to create shapes and collect data. The class had a brilliant day and were able to demonstrate their creativity, I know that they can't wait for their next computing day!

Please find attached the virtual classroom for activities to support your child.

Year 1 - Spring 2 - Week 6

Date: 2nd Apr 2025 @ 10:08pm

What a lovely Spring term we have had in year 1. We wished Miss Jones well on her maternity leave and Miss Bayley and Mrs Taylor have loved working with year 1.

We began our final week with a new Maths topic on Mass and Volume. Within this topic, we started by focusing on our STAR vocabulary, learning the meaning of words such as heavier, lighter, greater than and less than, as well as mass and weight. We had a great understanding of heavier and lighter, which was highlighted as we illustrated our ideas of heavy and light objects. We used measuring scales to have a go at measuring some objects so that we could physically see how the balancing scales work. We had a brilliant understanding of this and shared lots of great ideas as we discussed them as a class.

In history we have learnt about Florence Nightingale and enjoyed taking part in a workshop about her life. I know that the children have enjoyed writing about her in our writing area.

We took part in lots of Easter fun this week, getting into the holiday spirit. We got stuck into an exciting Easter egg hunt outside, where we ran around to find different coloured eggs. We have been utilising all of our Art and DT skills to create beautiful cards to bring home for you all to see. We really hope you love all of our creations! The children also enjoyed a visit from the police.  They tried on uniforms and explored the police van. The highlight was when they turned on the sirens!

The children have also been learning about the true meaning of Easter. The Worship Committee did a wonderful job leading a collective worship for the class. They taught the class about the symbols used during Lent and Easter. The children were very respectful during our Easter service in Church. This was a lovely way to end our spring term before we go home to enjoy the Easter break with our families.

Sadly, this term we are saying goodbye Miss McCoy, I wanted to take this opportunity to say a huge thank you to Miss McCoy for all that she has done for our Year 1 class. We are going to miss you very very much and will cherish the memories we have all made with you this year! We wish you lots of good luck in your next adventure.

Have a brilliant Easter holiday everyone, you all deserve a lovely break and a restful 2 weeks. Thank you very much for all of your ongoing support. We look forward to seeing you all in the summer term, ready to make some more wonderful memories. Enjoy! Miss Bayley and Mrs Taylor

The Easter break has arrived!

This week, we enjoyed taking part in several Easter activities…our final Easter celebrations in primary school! We participated in the annual Easter Egg Hunt and still had a visit from the Easter Bunny itself; on Friday, we attended the whole-school Easter Service at St. Peter’s Church where we were able to watch the Year 3 pupils perform the Easter story. We enjoyed joining in with several hymns and songs - which we have been practising each week during Sing and Praise - including ‘He Lives in You’ from The Lion King and ‘Lord of the Dance’.

Despite this being a short half-term, where we have mainly focused on preparations for SATs, there have still been many highlights:

  • Our weekly swimming sessions;
  • Trying new sports in PE lessons, such as kurling and tag rugby;
  • Many new SPaG songs;
  • A visit from some TSP alumni to discuss their experiences of secondary school;
  • Seeing our buddies;
  • World Book Day;
  • The Soccer Sports Challenge;
  • Lots of new games to help us revise, such as the very popular, ‘Trust No One’;
  • Enjoying our newly built UKS2 gym;
  • ‘Rock Steady’ music concerts and sports tournaments (football, swimming, athletics, kurling) for the majority of our pupils;

For home learning, additional tasks have been set on SATs Companion for over the Easter break and parents should have received a message on School Spider regarding useful links for further learning. Please be aware we are not suggesting all of these resources are to be utilised and that the children's mental health is always the priority. However, as some parents and children have asked for additional resources to support them over the Easter break, we are sharing with all in case any other children would like to further revise over the holiday period.

If we aren’t seeing you over the next two weeks, we hope you all have a lovely Easter break!

Year 1 - Phonics Screen Check

Date: 13th Mar 2025 @ 1:39pm

All children in Year 1 will take part in the annual, statutory, Year 1 Phonics Screening Check. This year, the check will take place on the week beginning Monday 9th June and will be administered in school by Miss Law.

This check is nothing to be worried about as the children have been preparing for this check since starting Reception class and have already had several opportunities to familiarise themselves with the delivery of the check itself with both Miss Jones and Miss Law.

Attached to this blog are a range of resources for you to use with your child at home. In addition to this, I have uploaded the QR code for the Phonics Virtual Classroom videos that are share each half term. This QR codes would have also been sent home in your child's reading folder on Friday 14th March.

Should you have any further questions or want to know more about the screening process itself, Miss Jones  will be available after school on Wednesday 19th March until 4pm.

What a fantastic week to end this half term! It has flown by in record time and there is much to be grateful for and to reflect upon.

Here are just some of our highlights:

  • Writing: We are incredibly proud of our children for creating beautifully written biographies of Commander Chris Hadfield for our Author Books. Paired with stunning watercolour artwork, they showcased both their best handwriting and their ability to write in a true biographical style!
  • Reading: Our reading journey took us through an exciting mix of fiction and non-fiction! The children listened to a variety of Greek myths, exploring legendary gods, heroes, and mythical creatures. We also dived into the fascinating world of space with the non-fiction text, 'Exploring Space', learning all about the wonders beyond our planet!
  • Maths: Our focus in lessons has been converting between fractions, decimals and percentages as well as exploring angles. We have also continued our weekly times tables focused lessons on TT Rockstars where each child has boosted their score and, impressively, a handful of children are now faster that their teacher;
  • RE: The children have been focusing on our key question linked to Easter, ‘Why do Christians believe that Easter is a celebration of victory?’;
  • Collective Worship: We have continued using Picture News as the focus of our Collective Worship sessions. Through these discussions, we have explored both the Christian values and the spiritual connections linked to each topic, encouraging thoughtful reflection and meaningful conversations;
  • PE: Highlights have included our Kinball sessions, which the children absolutely love! They have enjoyed all the mini-games while also developing their understanding of the rules and tactics for playing the sport itself;
  • Music: Finlay Gordon from Liverpool Cathedral Choir has continued to lead our vocal coaching sessions which culminated in a beautiful singing performance for the Year 5 and Year 4 parents;
  • History: We journeyed back to one of the most fascinating civilizations in history as we explored Ancient Greece and its many wonders. From its people and inventions to its art, technology, and mythology, we delved into the incredible legacy of the ancient Greeks;
  • DT: The children have been busy designing pop-up books mechanisms leading to the creation of their own pop-up ‘Jack and Jill’ book;

A fitting end to the week with Easter just around the corner! The Year 5 children deserve an enormous amount of credit for all of their efforts throughout this term and we hope they enjoy and make the most of their well-deserved break. Wishing you all a safe and enjoyable time with your families. See you in the summer term!
