What a busy, hard working week Year 2 have had!

In Maths, we continued our new topic of ‘Time’ where we explored quarter past and quarter to the hour in more detail. We then discussed how when the minute hand goes to a new number, this means five minutes have passed. We even noticed the link between this and our 5-times tables! Even though we found this a bit challenging, with determination and continually practising on our own clocks, we mastered this.

It was a very active week, as this week we continued practising our very own dance to The Little Mermaid’s ‘Under the Sea’. We became aquatic life again as we took on the role of all the creatures you would find under the sea.

In Geography, we explored the beautiful coast of St. Ives in Cornwall. We connected our learning back to the Autumn term where we explored Human and Physical features. We recapped these and then identified the human and physical features of

In Science, we continued to explore the importance of exercise and how it affects our body. We discussed all the different exercises, we as a class, take part in and how it makes us feel. We then went outside to have a run around and after, put our hands on our hearts and described how it felt.

To end the week, we explored the song contest Eurovision. We discussed how the UK are hosting it in Liverpool on behalf of Ukraine. We listened to the UK’s entry and think it’s great! We even designed our very own Eurovision outfit and thought about what song we would sing.

Have another great, song filled weekend Year 2!

Wow, what a busy week!

In Maths, we started our new topic of ‘Time’ where we started to explore o’clock and half past the hour. Then, we even started to look at quarter past and quarter to the hour. We found this challenging, but once we practised on our own clocks throughout the week, it got easier and easier.

We had an absolutely amazing time this week on Scooting day where we zoomed around the playground practising loads of different tricks. We were SO good at this, that we were even challenged to some skateboarding tricks. This required a lot of balance and concentration but we absolutely smashed it. The Year 2 team were so impressed!

It was a very active week, as this week we also started practising our very own dance to The Little Mermaid’s ‘Under the Sea’. We chose our Ariel and we became aquatic life as we took on the role of all the creatures you would find under the sea. We had a fabulous time and stunned everyone with our groovy dance moves so far. We can’t wait to continue this next week.

In Science, we explored the importance of exercise (something which we have done plenty of this week) and how it affects our body. We discussed all the different exercises, we as a class, take part in and how it makes us feel.

In preparation for the King’s Coronation this weekend, we created our very own clay crowns which we then bejewelled to make them fit for a King! We then brought these to our Coronation picnic at the end of the week. We had a fun packed day which any royal would have been jealous of!

Have another amazing long and well deserve weekend Year 2!

What another amazing week!

We have continued to develop our knowledge of fractions in Maths, continuing to explore thirds and quarters. We focused on 2/4 and ¾ and discussed how 2/4 is equivalent to a ½.

We continued to read our book in English, ‘The Last Wolf’. We discussed how the book primarily takes place in the forest/woods which got us thinking about other fairy tales that take place in the woods. We listened to the song ‘Prologue’ from the musical and movie ‘Into the Woods’ and discussed who we thought was singing the song and who they were singing about. We also listened to ‘If you go into the woods today’ and connected our learning to show what the common theme was. We then used adjectives to describe the forest, making sure that we used the suffixes ‘est’ and ‘er’. We also talked about how important it was for words that end in ‘y’ such as creepy or gloomy to drop the y, add an i and then the suffix.

In Religion, we continued our new topic ‘Why is the church a special place for Christians?’ We discussed what we consider a special place to be for ourselves and how this is different for everyone. We discussed how these are an amazing and special place to pray. We talked about the prayers we say in school and what they mean. We then had the opportunity to write our own prayer. Additionally, we explored a special placed called the ‘Tabernacle’ and we explored the symbols inside and what they mean.

In PE, we brought out the tennis rackets and had the challenge of controlling the ball and making sure we could hit a target. We found this challenging but super fun and especially loved it when we were challenged to get ten in a row!

Have amazing long and well deserved Bank Holiday weekend Year 2!

Reminders:

  • Monday 1st – Bank Holiday
  • PE lessons take place every Monday and Tuesday.
  • Wednesday 3rd – Can you please bring in trainers for the scootering event.

What a busy but fantastic first week back we have had! It was so lovely to see all the children back and enjoying spending time with their friends and hearing about what everyone got up to.

We have continued to develop our knowledge of fractions in Maths, looking at quarters, thirds and non-unit fractions. We now understand that the top number on a fraction is called a numerator and the bottom number is called the denominator. After identifying whether a fraction was a half, quarter or third we then discussed whether it was a unit or a non-unit fraction.

Our new book in English is ‘The Last Wolf’ which generated some discussion about endangered animals. We talked about how an animal could become endangered as well as researching some animals to create our very own ‘Animal Top Trump’ card deck. We then looked at aspects of the book where Little Red’s mum told her not to be late for tea. From this, we created our very own rule list for Little Red and how she could stay safe in the forest. We used contractions and subordinating conjunctions to make sure they were easy to follow.

In Geography, we focused on identifying the location of continents and the oceans on a world map jigsaw. We identified the equator, continents and oceans and then worked together to figure out where they should be placed. We worked really hard and our teamwork was amazing. In Science, we explored our new topic of ‘Healthy Me’ where we discussed what we need to keep us healthy. We looked at the Eatwell plate, talking about how certain foods give us energy, meaning we can keep active throughout the day. We then discussed how we also need to keep our brains healthy and identified ways we could do this through learning as well as activities that allow our brains to rest such as art or yoga.

In Religion, we began our new topic ‘Why is the church a special place for Christians?’ We discussed what we consider a special place to be for ourselves and how this is different for everyone. We then looked at the story ‘Jacob’s Dream’ and saw his special place and what this meant to him.

It has been so lovely to have you back, Year 2!

The Easter break has arrived!

On Thursday, we led the Easter Service with the Year 1’s at St Peter's Church where we were delivered several readings and prayers about ‘Hands at Easter’. We sang with all our hearts, several hymns and songs - which we have been practising each week during Sing and Praise - including ‘He Lives in You’ from The Lion King.

In Maths, we finished off our topic on Mass, Capacity and Temperature. Next term, we will start by looking at fractions, focusing on halves, quarters and thirds. After, we will explore time as well!

It was time to take on our DT project, designing our very own car! First, we explored the post importance features of a car such as the engine, wheels and a steering wheel. We then designed our car with our partner, discussing how we wanted it to look. Once this was finished, we were ready to take on the building part! After we had created our fantastic cars, we were challenged to a race. Despite a few car crashes, all cars made it past the finish line!

In RE we explored Easter food and how they symolise Easter. We tried some Simnel cake which has 11 'eggs' on top which represent the 11 disciples (excluding Judas and Jesus) and then we had some hot cross buns which has a cross that is symbolic for Jesus' crucifixion.

We finished off the week with a egg-tremely exciting Easter egg hunt! It was really fun and tasty as well! We also had a surprise visit from the Easter Bunny himself, who brought chocolate along with his crazy dance moves. We hip-hopped around the classroom with him which certainly brought on the Easter spirt.

What an amazing term we have had, Year 2. Have an absolutely incredible Easter with your friends and family. We look forward to seeing you back on Monday 17th April.

Reminders:

  • School commences on Monday 17th April.
  • Year 2 PE lessons continue to remain on a Monday and Tuesday this term. Please ensure children arrive to school dressed in their PE kit on these days.
  • After half term, children will be allowed to wear their summer uniform. Please see the school uniform policy for more information.

Year 2 - Spring 2 - Week 5

Date: 23rd Mar 2023 @ 4:22pm

What another great week in Year 2!

In English, we revisited the World War II video with Alan and his granddaughter, analysing the video and inferring how he might have felt. We then put on our creative hats to use our imagination to envision ourselves going to school during The Blitz. We created our very own diary entries based on this, detailing our day at school and how it made us feel. We also had lots of fun when learning about contractions and going on a detective word hunt in our class library to find as many as we could.

In Maths, we continued our topic of ‘Volume and Capacity’ where we looked at measuring in millilitres and litres. We also started our new topic of temperature, looking at different objects and places that we could consider hot, warm or cold.

In Science, we continued to explore forces and how things can move or change shape. We looked at pushing, pulling, twisting, stretching and various more forces. We then put this knowledge to the test by creating our very own character out of playdough, explaining what forces we were using at each stage.

In History, we explored the life of Queen Elizabeth II. We discovered that she reigned during a period called The New Millennium. We investigated her family history and found out that she married Prince Phillip when she was 21, two years after the war had finished. Her Dad was King George VI and when he died, Elizabeth had to become queen at only 25!

This week in RE, we looked at and discussed The Easter Story, how it celebrates Jesus Christ's resurrection. We then created our very own ‘Easter Spinner’ where we sequenced The Easter Story and pieced it together with split pins to make our very own hidden, segmented story.

You have worked super hard this week Year 2! Have a fantastic weekend.

 Reminders:

  • Children are encouraged to bring a water bottle to school and a healthy snack for breaktime.
  • PE days remain on a Monday and Tuesday this term. Please ensure children arrive to school dressed in their PE kit on these days.

What another fabulous week in Year 2!

In English, we finished our book Major Glad, Major Dizzy which we absolutely loved! We discussed the timeline throughout the book and how many years had passed. We then decided to write a letter to our grandparents to ask them questions about toys when they were young. The questions we came up with were incredible and really interesting. We then watched a video of a man called Alan who was telling his granddaughter all about life during World War 2 and how different it was to ours.

In Maths, we started our topic of ‘Volume and Capacity’ where we looked at measuring in millilitres and litres. We measured liquid using our own jugs, being very careful to ensure we were reading the correct line. Next week, we are going to look at temperature.

The classroom was exploding with lava on Wednesday, as we joined the rest of the school in celebrating British Science Week with a theme surrounding the weird and wonderful creations in George’s Marvellous Medicine. Our experiment not only allowed us to feel like scientists but we developed our understanding that when bicarbonate of soda and vinegar mix together they create water and carbon dioxide. The carbon dioxide creates the bubbles in the reaction which causes our lava to explode.

In our science lesson, we also created marshmallow and bunny rockets. Our investigation was to see how different size rockets combined with the force of our air could make a marshmallow/crisp travel. We used our critical thinking to predict what would happen and gave incredible reasoning as to why we thought this.

In History, we explored the life of Queen Victoria. We discovered that she reigned during the Victorian period. We investigated her family history and found out that she married Prince Albert (she had to propose, not him!) and when he died at the age of 42, she wore black for the rest of her life. We were also shocked to find out she had nine children and forty grandchildren!

Red nose filled the classroom on Friday as we completed lots of fun and games – all with a red theme – in aid of Red Nose Day. It was our mission to ensure we came together to raise smiles in recognition of helping others through tough times in their lives.

Finally, we want to wish all of the significant, inspiring women who surround us all, a very Happy Mother's Day, we hope you have a fantastic weekend full of love!

 Reminders:

  • Children are encouraged to bring a water bottle to school and a healthy snack for breaktime.
  • PE days remain on a Monday and Tuesday this term. Please ensure children arrive to school dressed in their PE kit on these days.

What a busy week in Year 2.

This week, the children have worked incredibly hard to complete assessments to showcase their learning so far this year. Our school value of ‘Hope’ was achieved by all, as everyone tried their absolute best.

In Religion, we identified aspects of the Easter Story where betrayal and trust were found. We then connected our learning to our Easter Service prayers where hands can help or hinder us. We identified whether we thought hands were helping or hindering in the Easter Story. We recognised that Jesus showed helping hands by healing those around him, but Judas showed hands that hindered when he collected money from the Roman authorities to betray Jesus.

We started our new topic of ‘Mass, capacity and temperature’ in maths this week where we began by looking at grams and kilograms. Next week we will continue to look at grams and kilograms whilst also introducing volume and capacity.

In History, we explored the life of Queen Elizabeth I. We discovered that she reigned during the Tudor period and her reign was referred to as ‘The Golden Age’. We investigated her family history and found out that her dad was Henry VII.

We then got to end the week with a fun snow day where we worked as a team and used our school value of ‘Imagine’ to create our very own snowmen. Although a cold task, we were up for the challenge! We had great fun!

You have worked very hard this week, have a wonderful weekend, Year 2.

Welcome back Year 2, we hope you had a lovely break!

What a busy start back! In English, we started to explore our new book in English ‘Major Glad, Major Dizzy’ by Jan Oke. We started by analysing the front cover without seeing the title and dissecting what we could see. We talked about how there were shadows and small lines of light, that there were mice scampering across the floor and so much more. From this, we discussed what we thought the book was about and what it might be called. The titles we came up with were super impressive!

We started our new topic of ‘Length and Height’ this week in Maths where we looked at centimetres and metres. We had the opportunity to measure objects from around the classroom as well as estimating their length or height. We even measured ourselves to see how tall we were! To challenge ourselves even further, we had the tricky challenge of comparing cm and m and then ordering objects from shortest to longest and vice versa.

In Science, we started our new topic of ‘Move it’ where we created our very own flying fish. We made them out of various sizes and materials and then let them ‘fly’. We analysed and discussed how they fell through the air to the ground and what affected them. We connected our learning back to our previous science topic ‘Materials’ to help us with our critical thinking of why some materials worked better than others.

In PE, we began our new topic of ‘Invasion’ where we looked at what being in possession meant and how we can support a teammate to do this. We also understood that scoring goals means that we are using out attacking skills and explored ways that we could achieve this. We had mini-challenge games to connect our learning back to our topic of ‘Teamwork’ and how we could incorporate this into our games.

You have worked very hard this week, have a wonderful weekend, Year 2.

 Reminders:

  • Children are encouraged to bring a water bottle to school and a healthy snack for breaktime.
  • PE days are now on a Monday and Tuesday this term. Please ensure children arrive to school dressed in their PE kit on these days.
  • Please remember to bring reading folders to school on your child's reading day.
  • World Book Day is on Thursday 2nd March

What another amazing week in Year 2.

We continued reading The Dragon Machine by Helen in English. We checked the CCTV cameras in Year 2 and found out that some dragons had visited us! At first, they only snuck into the classroom to eat some cheese but then they covered the camera to get up to some mischief! We had to write a letter to Mrs Pringle to let her know that there were dragons loose in the school. We also looked at various pictures such as a cave, a volcano, a forest etc. and used our positives and negatives hats to debate why a dragon would live here. We then used noun phrases and adjectives to come up with an amazing description of the dragon’s habitat.

We continued our topic of Money in Maths where we started to look at how much change customers would need if they didn’t have the exact amount of money. We played some fun Top Marks games where we had to count how much money was in the piggybank and then see if we could find different ways to create the same amount of money. Next week, we are going to begin our topic of Multiplication and Division.

In Science, we continued our topic of ‘Young Gardeners’ where we continued to look at and analyse our plants and how they were growing. We could already see for our group that eradicated water out of the plant’s diet, that the soil was very, very dry. Year 2 came to the conclusion that this meant the seed would be dry as well and that it would die before it had the chance to grow.

In Geography, we started to explore our new country, Kenya and compared it to the UK. We were even lucky enough for Mrs Giles to bring in necklaces and purses that were made in Kenya and travelled all the way back to Formby!

In PE, we used our fabulous teamwork skills to get a hoop around our class circle by stepping through it, wriggling our arms and shaking our heads. The challenge set to us was that we couldn’t break the circle and if we did, the hoop went back to the beginning. Year 2 were brilliant at this and as they got faster, the hoop got smaller. We also had the challenge of blindfolding ourselves and relying on the instructions given to us by our friends to help guide us. We realised how important it was to give clear instructions and to listen carefully. This was a fun challenge!

Year 2 finished off the week by celebrating Chinese New Year! We learnt about some of their unique traditions and customs whilst creating our own Chinese New Year decorations. We started our very own recorder lessons in Music this week! We practised holding our recorders correctly, were taught where to place our hands and even had the chance to play along to Ben the Bee!

You have worked very hard this week, have a wonderful weekend, Year 2.

Reminders:

  • Children are encouraged to bring a water bottle to school and a healthy snack for breaktime.

We have had a brilliant and busy week here in Year 2.

We continued reading The Dragon Machine by Helen Ward as our book in English for this half term. We began by creating a ‘Beware’ posted warning the rest of the school about the dragons that have been let loose. We used amazing vocabulary, adjectives and subordinating conjunctions to do this! Then we looking at the personality and character traits of the dragon and how it differs from their appearance. We compared the dragon in this book to the one in our Guided Reading book, The Dragonsitter by Josh Lacey and used a bubble map to discuss what they had in common and what made them different.

We continued our topic of Money in Maths where we set up our very own shops! The shops were a great success with loads of customers coming to buy items! It was so much fun adding their shopping up and using the different coins to find our amounts. We then started to compare different amounts of money and discussed how although one pile might have more coins, this doesn’t necessarily mean they are worth more.

. In Science, we continued our topic of ‘Young Gardeners’ and became a group of green fingers when planting our very own flowers. We discussed the lifecycle of a plant as well as using our critical thinking to recap on what a plant needs to stay healthy and grow. We then delivered our plants to their experiment spot, some in fridges, some in dark rooms and some even trapped in a box! We will visit these plants over the coming weeks to see if they can grow without the vital components they need.

We had the opportunity to watch ‘The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse’, a hand-drawn animated film based on the children's book by Charlie Mackesy on BBC iPlayer – highly recommended! The story reminded us about the importance of kindness, friendship, courage and hope. We absolutely loved watching it and went through a rollercoaster of emotions.

In Religion, we explored what the story of ‘The Ten Lepers’ and discussed how the men felt before and after they met Jesus. We linked this story with ‘The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse’ and thought about how showing kindness to people is so important.

You have worked amazingly hard this week, have a wonderful weekend, Year 2.

Reminders:

  • Parent-Teacher meetings can be booked via School Spider.
  • Children are encouraged to bring a water bottle to school and a healthy snack for breaktime.

PE y2.jpeg

What a wonderful start to the New Year! We were so happy to welcome everyone back to Year 2 and start learning again.

We started the week with some fun, teambuilding activities in PE! We had to make our ways through a tricky obstacle course whilst remembering what challenges we had to complete along the way. We worked in our teams to help and encourage each other and continued to cheer our teammates on for the whole session!

The Dragon Machine by Helen Ward is our focus book in English for this half term. We began by exploring a picture of some shiny, scaly dragon eggs and discussing what we thought they were, were they had come from and what was going to happen to them. We then used amazing vocabulary to write our own noun phrases to describe how they looked. We made sure to use lots of adjectives to make it really interesting. We also made predictions about what we thought the story would be about. We worked in groups to critically analyse picture clues and what they told us about the story. Our creative hats came out when we started to write our ideas down.

We started our new topic of Money in Maths where we recognised each coin and what it was worth. We learned ways to count money and how it is easier to start with the bigger coins. We even got to compare the weight of a 20p vs twenty 1p coins to see how it would be better to have less coins in our purses and wallets. We will continue this topic next week, looking at comparing money, as well as various ways we can make up a pound.

In Science, we began our exciting topic of ‘Young Gardeners’ where we explored the different aspects that a plant needs to stay healthy. We used critical thinking to discuss why a plant needs certain elements like water and the sun to stay healthy. We compared a healthy plant with an unhealthy plant and thought about why this had happened and what we could do to keep it healthy.

In Religion, we explored what the word ‘thankful’ means and discussed things that we are thankful for in life. We looked at the story of Jesus and the blessed children, looking at Jesus’ actions throughout the story and how he was a friend to everyone.

 Reminders:

  • Year 2 PE lessons take place every Monday and Wednesday. Please ensure your child arrives at school in their PE kit on these days.

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas!

We arrived to school on the 1st December to find our classroom full of festive decorations and a cheeky little elf zip lining into our classroom.  With a few clues spotted around our room, the elf revealed his name was Buddy. Christmas joy filled the room when we uncovered a note from Buddy informing us that he had left the North Pole and is visiting our classroom for Christmas. He also delivered a very special Christmas book for us to read! Buddy told us that he would love to be a part of the Year 2 team and will be on his best behaviour.

Our festivities really took off, with a trip to the Christmas Extravaganza on Friday. We loved taking part in the various activities, spending time with our friends and singing along to our favourite Christmas songs. A huge thank you Team TSP for organising such a fantastic event!

We started the week with a relaxing PE lesson where we had the challenge of holding various yoga poses. We became dolphins, seals, boats, jellyfish and even starfish! We then had a couple of minutes where we practised our deep breathing and gave our minds a moment to switch off.

In Maths, we started our new topic of ‘Geometry’ where we started to look at 2D and 3D shapes.  continue to look at addition and subtraction with 2-digit numbers. We are challenging ourselves to harder equations and working more independently.

In Science, we continued to look at materials and their properties. This week, we worked as a team to sort out objects and materials to put them into the correct bins.

We are thoroughly enjoying our Guided Reading lessons. This week we looked at Advent and Christingle and how important these events are to Christians. We looking at the meaning behind them and what each aspect represents. We used our retrieval and inference skills to locate the answers to questions and then our writing skills to write a sentence using excellent grammar and spelling by using our phonic skills.

Have a lovely weekend, Year 2!

Another brilliant week in Year 2!

We started the week with an active PE lesson where we practised our control with tennis rackets and balls. We had to weave in and out of cones (and some of our friends) whilst making sure we kept control of our ball at all times. We also had to have beady eyes to find our partners and return the ball back to them before the time was up! We had great fun with this challenge.

In RE, we connected our understanding of what good news is and used our critical thinking to link this to the birth of Jesus. We thought about why the news was important, how it was important as well as looking at what the story taught us and how it makes a difference in our lives.

In Maths, we continue to look at addition and subtraction with 2-digit numbers. We are challenging ourselves to harder equations and working more independently.

Our historical knowledge continued to widen this week as we delved deeper into the Tudor life and examined the houses that they would have lived in during the Great Fire of London. We discussed the features of a Tudor house, what we could see and why they had these. We also discovered that they used daub (a mixture of clay and animal dung) to help plaster the walls. How smelly!

In Science, we continued to look at materials and their properties. This week, we worked as a team to sort out objects and materials to put them into the correct bins.

We are thoroughly enjoying our Guided Reading lessons. This week we looked at Rosa Parks and built on our knowledge from Year 1. We used our retrieval and inference skills to locate the answers to questions and then our writing skills to write a sentence using excellent grammar and spelling by using our phonic skills.

Have a lovely weekend, Year 2!

Wow, what another brilliant week!

We arrived to school ready to celebrate Kindness Week on Monday, following a delightful weekend showcasing out Kindness Video to our loved ones at home.  With the understanding that this week marked Kindness Week, Anti-Bullying Week and also Children in Need, we knew spreading kindness was our missing throughout the week. On Friday, we also arrived at school in our Pudsey ears in aid of Children in Need.

We started the week with a very active PE lesson practising our sending and receiving skills. Our teamwork skills were amazing when working together to bounce the ball to each other as fast as we could.  In History, we continued to explore The Great Fire of London. We learned all about why the fire spread so quickly, how long it spread for and continued our diary entries all about it.

In Maths, we continued our topic of addition and subtraction. We continued looking at ‘subtracting a two-digit number from a two-digit number across a ten’. Whilst we found this challenging, it was really fun to delve into and try our absolute best! We also did some fun games like Around the World and Mathopoly here our maths knowledge was put to the test.

Friday brought the end of our week as well as the end of Celebration of Kindness Week. In the morning, we were given the amazing opportunity to be kind to our community by helping Team TSP create decorations and gifts that will be sold at Formby’s Christmas Lights Market. This was a fabulous opportunity to mix with the rest of the school and show kindness by helping others.

We are excited to welcome the Book Fair back next week. Don’t forget the fair will run from 24.11.22 to 29.11.22 and we encourage all to go and see the delightful books the fair has to offer.

Year 2 have had a brilliant, hard-working week! Have a lovely, relaxing weekend and we will see you all on Monday.

Year 2 Reminders:

PE days will take place on Monday and Wednesday, please come in full PE kit.

Great Fire of London.jfif

Wow, what a fantastic week!

We started the week with a very active PE lesson with a little help from our Sports Ambassadors who lead a fun warm up. We swam like fish, danced like pirates whilst also practising our sending and receiving skills. We then had a friendly game of football rounders.

In History, we continued to explore The Great Fire of London. We learned all about how the fire started, where it started and who started it. This week, we were transported back to 1666 where we imagined we were Samuel Peyps. We wrote a diary entry informing us all about The Great Fire of London using quills and ink. We are going to be continuing this next week.

In Maths, we continued our topic of addition and subtraction. We looked at ‘subtracting a two-digit number from a two-digit number across a ten’. Whilst we found this challenging, it was really fun to delve into and try our absolute best! We also did some fun games like Around the World where our maths knowledge was put to the test.

In Science, we continued our topic of ‘Materials’ and had the opportunity to look at and feel looks of different materials such as velvet, polystyrene and silk. We used our critical thinking to look back at last week and think about what these materials could be used for. We then worked in teams to come up with lots of different adjectives to describe them.

We connected our Collective Worship value of Peace with Remembrance Day this week, as we created our own poppy wreath. We then discussed how the poppy is a sign of remembrance and why we honour Remembrance Day. We then observed a two-minute silence to pay our respect and remember those who died in the war.

Year 2 have had a brilliant, hard-working week! Have a lovely, relaxing weekend and we will see you all on Monday.

'Love Reading for Kids' have released their early November newsletter. This includes a first look at their Christmas Books and Gift Guide which is full of great ideas for all readers. Books really do make the best presents so please do take a look!

Date: 4th Nov 2022 @ 2:29pm

Busyweek.jfif

We have started this term with a very busy but fantastic week!

Our week began with a look at our new Collective Worship monthly value of peace. We took the time to think about what peace looks like and times when we feel at peace. In Religion, we looked at how news is spread and how good news was spread for God. We then researched different artistic styles of angels, chose our favourite and then created our own.

In Maths, we continued our topic of addition and subtraction. We looked at ‘subtracting a one-digit from a two-digit number’ as well as ‘subtracting a two-digit number from a two-digit number’. Whilst we found this challenging, it was really fun to delve into and try our absolute best! We also did some team maths where we had a friendly competition of ‘Hit the Button’ and ‘Spell the Number’.

In Science, we started to investigate and identify materials and their uses. We put on our thinking hats to discuss how each material has various uses.

There is no doubt that this week has been a busy one, as we filmed our Kindness Week Video. From gelled hair to 90s plaits, our hairstyles brought the 90s theme to life as we sang, danced and raved throughout the week to some classic 90s songs. We can’t wait to see our amazing efforts be brought to the big screen next week when our video premiers.

After such a busy week, make sure you get some rest Year 2 and get ready for our Kindness Video premier next week!

How time has flown!

We have had another fabulous week in Year 2 and have ended the half term on a high!

In PE, we practised our underarm throws and catching skills. We then ended our lesson by completing four 4 laps of our mini marathon. We were wrecked by the end, but what a great achievement! We absolutely loved our visit from Unite, Formby for our Self-Defence session this week. It was incredible and taught us some basic self-defence skills including releases from ‘grabs’.

In Music, we continued our theme of ‘African Music’ and looked at ‘The Lion Sleeps Tonight’. We listened very carefully and described what instruments and voices we could hear.

In Maths, we continued our topic of ‘addition and subtraction’ as well as revising our number bonds to 10 and 100. We started the week by looking at ‘adding 2-digit numbers across a ten’. Then we began to look at ‘subtracting 2-digit numbers across a ten’. We found this challenging but really enjoyed learning new and exciting maths.

We created our very own ‘Online Safety Leaflet’ in Computing this week. We had a big discussion about how we use the internet and how we can stay safe online. We then used these fantastic ideas and tips to put into our very own leaflet.

We also loved having a boogie at the annual TSP Disco, with its spooky theme! The glow in the dark theme made it more exciting! We played musical statues, dancing to the ‘Monster Mash’ and even got to eat some spooky sweets at the end! It truly was an incredible event, thank you to all involved.

Year 2's Virtual Classroom has been uploaded onto Tapestry if you wish to access this.

Year 2, you have been an absolute delight to teach this half term and I cannot wait to see what the rest of the term, and year, has in store for us. From all of us here in Year 2, have a wonderful and well-earned rest.

Year 2 Reminders:

  • School will return on Monday 31st October at 8:40am.

hello yellow.jpeg

What another brilliant week we've had in Year 2!

We began the week with Hello Yellow Day! We created flags with messages of positivity, kindness and hope which were then used to create a ‘Positivity Pathway’. We had a fabulous time walking through the yellow path and reading all the gorgeous messages that everyone left.

We had an absolutely fantastic PE lesson. We became masters of dribbling and toe taps! There were definitely some footballers in the making! We also started with a friendly competition of ‘Hats’ and ended with ‘Sharks’. We continued this into our next PE lesson where we practised our strikes and ability to stop the ball.

In Music, we continued our song ‘Hands, Feet and Heart’. This week, we became composers and added our own section to the song. We worked in teams or ‘bands’ to create our song and really impressed the Year 2 team.

In Maths, we continued our topic of ‘addition and subtraction’ as well as revising our number bonds to 10 and 100. We started the week by looking at ‘adding 2-digit numbers’. Then we began to look at ‘subtracting 2-digit numbers’ and even had a look at column addition and subtraction! We will be continuing this topic next week and how we can add 2-digit numbers across a ten.

We loved flying sky-high this week to look at aerial photos of countries from around the world. From this, we had the challenge of identifying physical (natural) and human (man-made) features in pictures of China, Croatia and many more! Next week, we will start looking at creating a key for a map.

We continued to look at more artwork created by Giuseppe Arcimboldo; this week was ‘The Cook’, ‘Earth’, and ‘Water’. We explored all the animals that had been used in it and how it related to their title. We then created our own animal portrait using oil pastels.

We ended the week by coming into school in our pyjamas in support of  Alder Hey and the NHS. We loved seeing everyone in their cosy pyjamas and slippers at school! We even put on a Pyjama Runway with everyone getting the opportunity to show off our wonderful pyjamas and moves. We had some judges to score us of of 10 - we had great fun!

What another amazing week we've had in Year 2!

We started the week with a hands-on PE lesson. We practised our hand control with balls, practised our rolling skills and then even tried our own version of bowling. I think we have some professional bowlers on our hands!

In Music, we continued our song ‘Hands, Feet and Heart’. This week, we made our song a duet! Half of the class used glockenspiels to play the backing rhythm of the song whilst the other half played the verses and the chorus. Then, we even attempted to sing along! The whole Year 2 team were super impressed with our multi-tasking and teamwork skills.

In Maths, we started our new topic of ‘addition and subtraction’ as well as revising our number bonds to 10 and 100. We started the week by looking at ‘Related Facts’ and how we could work out ‘30+70’ by knowing ‘3+7’. We then used this knowledge to look at number bonds to 100 before starting addition and subtraction problems to 20. We ended the week by adding three 1-digit numbers and using our number bonds to help us.

We loved travelling around the world and researching animals across the hemispheres. We worked in small groups to create our very own fact file of these different animals. Next week, we look forward to looking at the physical and human features from an aerial view.

Year 2 brought their reading alive during English and became Shantymen when singing their own rendition of The Wellerman. Everyone worked as a team to keep the rhythm of the sea shanty. It was extremely impressive! We then had a little boogie to it as well.

We continued to look at more artwork created by Giuseppe Arcimboldo; this week was ‘Flora’. We explored all the flowers used in it and how it relates to spring, especially at the spring goddess Flora. After analysing and discussing Arcimboldo’s work, we had a at creating our own portrait made of leaves and flowers.

Blog 4.jpeg

What another brilliant week we've had in Year 2!

We were delighted to take part in our very own school Read-a-thon and drop everything on Monday and Tuesday to read! We filled our Read-a-thon sessions with books we loved to read as well as reading our own class novel James and the Giant Peach.

We started the week with a fantastic PE lesson playing various activities where we had to make quick decisions, show respect for others and displayed honesty when getting caught. In PE we also slithered like snakes, bounced like bunnies and scampered like mice.

In Music, we bought out the glockenspiels and played along to our song ‘Hands, Feet and Heart’. We showed amazing teamwork when helping our partner read the notes they had to play.

In Maths, we continued our topic of ‘Place Value’. We started by looking at mathematical symbols less than, greater than and equal to. We also showed our knowledge of number lines by labelling number lines to 100. At the end of the week, we started to show our addition and subtraction skills by adding and subtracting numbers to 20. Miss Finlay, Mrs Giles and Mr Hughes were very impressed! Next week, we will continue to look at addition and subtraction problems to 20 as well as number facts to 100.

In English, we have continued to develop our Reading and Writingduring our Phonics lessons. We spent the week developing our writing skills as well as being able to say, hold and build our sentences carefully. We were very careful throughout making sure we used appropriate punctuation.

We loved recapping on the seven continents this week as well as comparing the UK and Ecuador, specifically the capital city Quito. We learned all about the similarities and differences between the two countries. Next week, we look forward to learning about where animals live, what climate they need and why.

In Science, we were creepy crawly explorers! We went on a mini-beast hunt and managed to discover all the different insects that live in our school grounds. We made sure to use our school value ‘Nurture’ to make sure we were careful when visiting the insects’ habitats.

During our RE lesson, we looked at and explored the different stories from the Old Testament and the New Testament. We listened to a variety of stories from each and then created a ‘book cover’ for stories from each. We found them really interesting and thought the message that each story was trying to send and tell us was really special.

We continued to look at more artwork created by Giuseppe Arcimboldo; this week was ‘The Four Elements’. We explored these elements, ‘water, fire, air and earth’ and discussed what we thought we would see in each painting. After analysing and discussing Arcimboldo’s work, we had a turn at creating our very own elemental painting.

Don’t forget to follow our Twitter account @Year2TSP to see our learning highlights throughout the week.

From everyone here in Year 2, we wish you a lovely, relaxed weekend and look forward to seeing you on Monday.

We have had another fantastic week here in Year 2!

We started the week by reading all about Samuel Pepys, looking at facts about him and even reading some of his diary!

In Maths, we continued our topic of ‘Place Value’. We started by writing numbers up to 100 in digits and words. Then we revised and solved number facts to 20 and discussed the value of each digit. We then had the challenge of a ‘Mystery Picture’ where we had to solve the number facts, colour them in and reveal the hidden picture. Next week, we will continue to focus on place value, showing numbers on a number line as well as using mathematical symbols.

In English, we enjoyed exploring our new books, developing our writing skills as well as saying and holding our sentences carefully. We were very eagle-eyed, making sure we used appropriate punctuation throughout.

In Art, we looked at the artwork ‘The Four Seasons’ created by Giuseppe Arcimboldo. We analysed and discussed what we saw in each painting and how they linked to the seasons. Afterwards, we imagined how our own seasonal painting might look and thought about what we would include.

This week in Science, we put on our ‘Facts Hats’ and researched an animal to create our very own fact file. We found out loads of interesting facts about flamingos, elephants, sloths and many more!

We then finished the week by singing our hearts out for our Harvest Service! We loved singing these hymns over the past couple of weeks and hope you sang along with us in church. To celebrate National Fitness Week, we joined the incredible Dame Darcey Bussell for a virtual dance and had a little boogie with her. Strictly, here we come! We then ended the day by discussing ‘The Creation Story’ in RE and talked about how important and special it is to us.

Roald Dahl.jpeg

What a wonderful week here in Year 2, filled with so many exciting learning opportunities!

In Music, we focused on finding the beat of a song – tapping and singing along to ‘Hands, Feet and Heart’. We then impressed Miss Finlay, Mrs Giles and Mr Hughes by learning it off by heart and performing it for them at the end of our lesson.

In PE, we all showcased our school value and had ‘Hope’ to believe in ourselves that we could all do our absolute best. We concentrated on our running and dodging skills, playing various games and having friendly competitions to continually improve these skills.

We put our ‘facts hats’ on in Geography, when we explored the continents and oceans of the world. Year 2 learned about the equator, how to tell if a country is hot or cold as well as being able to name all the continents and oceans!

In Science, we were able to classify objects into their groups – living, dead or never alive. This required us to put on our ‘thinking hats’ as we worked in groups to identify and sort objects into their matching ‘hoop’.

This week in Maths, we focused on Place Value and showcasing what each number is worth. We have been working hard to break down numbers into their tens and ones as well as being able to partition numbers to 100. Not only this, but we have been revising our number bonds every day!

This week also marked Roald Dahl day and we were inspired by our class novel ‘James and the Giant Peach’ to create our own Roald Dahl bookmarks. Year 2 are loving our novel and like James are eager to find out what will happen next.

Don’t forget to follow our Twitter account @Year2TSP to see our learning highlights throughout the week.
